Gilroy is a town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 18,471 at the 2010 census. Gilroy is part of the Fresno-Madera Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the banks of the Central Valley River and is adjacent to Tulare County to the east and Kern County to the west. The townsite that now makes up Gilroy was first settled by Mexicans in 1848 as part of Rancho El Cerrito de las Flores. The name originated from a grant given by Mexican Presidentna Maria Félix Castilla to John Sutter for his new Gold Rushtownsite in central California. The town's namesake, General Mariano Jose Garza y Costilla, arrived in 1849 and founded what would become known as San Francisco de Asís (present-day Sacramento). In 1861, when California became an American state, it included Santa Clara County and parts of San Joaquin Counties within its boundaries; however, Asís remained a separate municipality until 1870 when it united with other nearby municipalities under one single government structure called "San Joaquin Municipality". In 1906–07 during US involvement with World War I—the Red Scare—the US military began demolishing many houses near downtown Gilroy due to allegations that they were being used as storage or headquarters for antiwar socialists who were suspected of sympathizing with Germany. Many residents who had their homes destroyed did not want their property taken down because they believed that if it had been their dwellings which were destroyed rather than those of radicals they would have faced much harsher penalties from military authorities at the time than they did because of their political beliefs.
