In 1867, Gilroy was founded on the banks of the Sacramento River by a group of American farmers. The town quickly became a manufacturing and agricultural center, with industries such as lumber, clothing, and cigars. Gunsmiths (and later gunfighters) were important in Gilroy's history, and it is still home to one of the most popular gun shows in Northern California. Gunfights took place throughout the early 1800s in and around Gilroy, often resulting in scores of casualties on both sides. In 1881, local law enforcement officers responded to a race riot that had broken out between white residents and Mexican immigrants. After several hours of gunfire, all but two members of the Mexican community were killed or wounded. This event helped spark an increased interest in regulating firearms within California society. In 1906, Gilroy voters passed a ordinance creating a city police department. This decision led to increased violence against civilians by outlaw gangs such as The Outlaws. As law enforcement increased its presence in the town, however, crime stopped becoming an issue; this is likely due to the fact that shotguns were then not commonly used for homicide or gang warfare outside of urban areas). The early 20th century saw rapid growth inGilroy - spurred by World War I and new technologies like aviation - but also significant economic decline because of drought-forced reductions in crop production and other factors." Gilroy, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 797 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Gilroy were the Ohlone Indians who lived on or near present-day Fir tree Valley from before 4500 BC. The area was traversed by early traders and missionaries, and came under Mexican control following the Mexican–American War of1848. In 1851, part of Rancho Rincon de las Palmas y Mescalero y La Jolla was sold to John Sutter for $20,000. In 1865, part of Rancho San Luis Obispo de la Laguna was sold to James Hahn for $2 million. In 1868, Henry Tejon bought Rancho Rincon de las Palmas y Mescalero y La Jolla from Pedro Blanco for $8 per acre (0.40 per km²). From this purchase date until his death in 1928, Tejon led one of the most successful farming operations in California history. He raised more than 50 thousand head of cattle and sheep and cultivated over 100 thousand plants including almonds, tomatoes, grapes and pistachios; he also founded a number of businesses such as a flour mill and sawmill along with many other enterprises which continue to thrive to this day including a variety of retail outlets as well as several professional sports teams that call Gilroy home - both college football programs (the University of California at Berkeley Bulldogs and the Sacramento Kings) as well as professional baseball (the Los Angeles Angels) have their roots here). His land still remains important today because it contains nearly all of present-day Gilroy City limits save for two small areas: One located immediately northwest of downtown on I-5 between Beech Street/Foothill Boulevard/US 101 Business Loop (and ZIP code 91724), while the other lying east off I-5 between Beech Street/Foothill Boulevard/US 101 Business Loop (and ZIP code 91725) - these are known collectively as "The Tejon Triangle". In 1872, Gilbert married Anna Maria Smith and they moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico but soon after returned to Gilroy to marry again and start a family. The couple had four children before Anna Maria died in 1907. In 1916, Gilbert donated land to create what is now Downtown Gilroy which included the first municipal building in California. From its beginnings as a small farming town until the late 20th century,Gilroy experienced significant growth and development including several waves of immigration; most notably Italians during World War II while also hosting many famous American athletes such as Rudy Tomjanovich and Billie Jean King during their careers at nearby West Point High School. Additionally, much of this growth came about through cooperation between businesses and government entities with downtown becoming one of the most vibrant areas in Northern California during this time period.
