The city's population reached its peak in 1920 with more than 20,000 residents. During World War II, Gilroy was one of the leading jobs centers in California because of its strategic location at the mouth of Highway 101 between San Francisco and Los Angeles. However, during the postwar period growth slowed and inflation caused many businesses to close or go out of business. As a result,Gilroy experienced significant decline in population from its heyday until it regained some stability during the 1990s when new housing developments began to proliferate along Highway 101.
Gilroy, California is a small city in San Joaquin County, California. It was founded in 1883 by Anglo-American pioneers. The population of the city was 8,000 at the 2010 census. The town of Gilroy sprang up on land west of what is now downtown Gilroy and east of the Mokelumne River. The first post office opened in 1884. The first store was run by James W. Webb and his daughter Lillie Ducharme from their home on Second Street. A water tower was built in 1886 to provide drinking water for the townspeople; it still stands today and is a part of the Historic Districts Preserve around it. In 1907, an electric company laid down wire along Seventh Street from First to Ninth Streets; this street became known as "Electric Avenue." In 1912, the Santa Clara Valley Water Authority (SCVWA) was established to provide irrigation and water resources for agricultural purposes throughout southern San Joaquin County including Gilroy and surrounding communities such as Stockton and Moraga; SCVWA acquired additional lands within Gilroy limits over time. In 1916, when all but two blocks of downtown were destroyed by fire, community leaders decided to change their name from "City" to "Gilroy". At that time there were only 10 residents living in downtown with just one bank account! One block down on Electric Avenue (now Third Street), settlers had erected a large frame building which served as a schoolhouse until 1951 when it burned down due to arson - again without causing any damage! By 1925 there were 175 citizens living in downtown with six banks account holders! In 1931 Gilbertians voted unanimously to annex portions of Unincorporated Castro Valley which lies north of Downtown Gilroy on State Route 3 between Castro Valley Road and Highway 1 (now Interstate 80). When that annexation occurred they also changed their name back to "Gilroy". From then until 1967 no new businesses or homes were developed within downtown boundaries - except for slight expansion taking place along Electric Avenue during that time period because so much growth had taken place elsewhere within town limits!
