In 1868, when towns began to be formed outside of San Joaquin County, Arguellesville became part of what would become Gilroy. The first wood-framed school building was built there in 1870 by Rev. George Henson (1811 – 1865). In 1875–76 Drs. Isidore Warshaw and John Satterwhite designed new schools for the community which remain standing today as two contributing properties within the City limits of Gilroy that are now used for educational purposes by the School District #1 (union) . Leland Stanford Junior had promised his father if he could find a way to bring over water from 20 miles (32 km) away he could construct a railroad through parts of Northern California that would link up with other railroads near Sacramento or Everett so that goods could be shipped eastward to China without having to go through Manila or Acapulco on the Philippine Sea where it would be exposed to piracy and wariu
