For three months during August and September alone prospectors rushed to claim claims along Routes 120 and 153; soon there were so many claims that officials had difficulty assigning them to claimants. Just two weeks before the discovery, Doniphan had offered $5 per share for shares but only received 300 shares due to popular opposition from speculators who saw no chance for success at this price point The rush resulted in extensive damage to homes and businesses; roads were built only where possible because it would be easy for wagon trains carrying ore down Route 120 or up Route 153; schools were closed so children could be taken away with their parents to look for riches; prostitution thrived because men could not resist spending money on sex when they heard about rich seams; crime increased because people felt like they needed more money than anyone else wanted or could get The floods following summer rains turned areas around Sacramento into marshland while raising water levels making it possible for men working upstream to dredge coal deposits 50 feet below surface Gold production continued until 1861 when work stopped due mainly to lack of equipment although some continue today as open pit mines In 1863-64 local resident John Sutter created what is now known as Sutterville which grew rapidly due largely to irrigation coming through his ranches provided he received consent from government officials In 1867-68 Chinese laborers took over most building projects including churches then replaced by Mexican Americans during Feather River War against US forces Thereafter steady growth until 1906 when oilakiing began providing jobs
