Gardena, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 25,644 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the Inland Empire and one of the largest cities in Orange County. Gardena is also part of the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area. The first recorded sighting of an instrument with a magnification greater than 4x occurred on July 26, 1854 when Captain Bache saw a telescope on Mount Wilson from his ship "Central America". A few years later, on December 5, 1857, Dr. George Howe acquired a new 10 inch refractor telescope which he called "the Hoya" after his native country (Hungary). From 1865 to 1889 he operated it at Mt. Wilson Observatory with help from his son-in-law Professor Edward Murchison and other assistants including astronomers Edwin Hubble and James Clerk Maxwell. On October 8th 1888 Guglielmo Marconi made history when he used his wireless transmitter to send signals from Long Island to Caracas, Venezuela using a telescope at Kings Point Naval Station on Long Island Sound as an antenna. Gardena is a small city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 12,713 at the 2010 census. Gardena is part of Fresno County and is located east-northeast of Fresno. The area now known as Gardena was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. One account says that Captain George Vancouver landed on what is now central Gardena Peninsula on July 14, 1792 during his exploration of the Pacific Ocean. He named this area for his hometown, Gardiner, New York. The first European to visit this region were Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and Father Junípero Serra who arrived in 1797 and 1798 respectively. In 1825, Santa Clara County was established from parts of Alta California including much of present day Kern County. At this time there were only a few small villages in what are now Kern and Riverside Counties with a total population under 2,000 people. By 1830 most of the settlers had departed for other areas within Southern California or else emigrated to Nevada due to gold strikes there at that time. Some early pioneers in what would become Gardena included John Ladd (1812-1893), one of the original farmers who settled along Canoga Avenue near Nowata Street; Aaron Burr (1820-1902) who farmed on El Sobrante Creek; James Fenton (1846-1924) who built an adobe house on Chapel Street near current Highway 120; Jules Ahern (1861-) who founded Ahern’s Grocery store opposite First Baptist Church on Canoga Ave.; Augustus Stonestreet (1862-) operated an apothecary shop at 4th & Elm Streets which became a druggist business later called Germain Drug Store Incorporated; Wm Haggerty ran a feed store at 6th & Elm Streets which became known as Haggerty’s Feed Store until it burned down in 1916; John Sledge operated an Odd Fellows Lodge No 521 at 266 Adams Boulevard until it disbanded circa 1920 when he moved to Anaheim where he died years later; Willis Epps ran several stores before he too moved away from Gardena around 1925 or so.;Frederick Riggs started operating a grocery store at 136 Neches Avenue which became Garner’s Grocery Incorporated after Riggs sold it to Harry Garner in 1951.;Eddie Dowell opened up his own gas station across from IHOP about 1915.- In 1924 gasoline began being sold inside McDonald's restaurant located off Old Ulysses Road south west corner -this location has been vacant since then.- In 1954 Ford dealership was opened adjacent to IHOP also containing two restaurants -the one currently occupied by Joe's Pizza has been open since 1955.- In 1967 Serviceco Supply Co.,Truck Stop/Gas Station opened next door consisting primarily of used cars -this business continued until 1977 when it closed down due to economic difficulties.--In 1978 Los Angeles Times article described "Gardena's Next Big Thing" stating that "residential real estate developers are redoing downtown streetscape changes hereto make way for single family homes." This led to development around South Main Street including numerous late 1800s era houses which have been preserved and renovated.--Since then various other businesses have cropped up such as Eddie's Paper Goods chain SupermarketGFM Mart convenience store next door carrying general purpose items such as candy bars etc., Parks Department Recycling Facility with dumpster available nearby for customers', Red Lobster restaurant featuring lobster dishes servedFamily fun park situated behind High School with rides/games/parades etc... having recently closed down.--Recently another business activity taking place within walking distance Handyman services home improvement work done such as painting ect...
Gardena, California was founded on November 17, 1847 by Captain James K. Polk as the site of a new military post called Fort Yuma. The first town in what is now Gardena was born from tent City growth around the fort. A post office and school were established at Gardena on December 6, 1847. In 1850, General Antonio L. Sanchez moved his army from Tucson to what is now Gardena to cross the Sonoran Desert and secure an passage for supplies to California. He renamed the area Fort Yuma after his old headquarters in Tucson. The city of Gardena grew rapidly due to its location near two major routes: The Southern Pacific Railroad ran through town and Senate Road connected it with Los Angeles County; and miners traveled through nearby Apache Pass looking for gold ore. In 1861, when San Francisco became a city, Gardena became one of its wards; it remained so until 1870 when it was annexed by San Francisco proper. On February 15th 1865 during the American Civil War, Confederate General John Cordingly attacked Fort Yuma while several thousand Union soldiers were stationed there guarding supplies sent upriver from Sacramento in support of President Abraham Lincoln’s war effort against secessionists across America. The attack failed but resulted in over 50 Confederate casualties including five officers and 25 enlisted men killed or wounded; this event is often cited as one of the turning points in the Civil War in desert land
