Gardena is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 22,898 at the 2010 census. Gardena is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1878 by three men from Stockton, California: John Sutter, George onion and Augustus Graham. The first European to visit Gardena was José del Valle who landed on November 5, 1769. He named it San Francisco de los Bancos because he thought it would be easier to find banks there than in Monterey Peninsula. In 1821, Rancho Los Nietos was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado for his rancho known as Ejido de las Aguas Calientes (Hacienda de las Aguas Calientes). In 1881, the citizens of Stockton petitioned for annexation into Gardena due to their lack of water resources within their own municipality and shared an estimated $2 million worth of construction materials with the new city during its early years. On July 15, 1882, Gardena officially became a city with a population of 775 people when it annexed parts ofStockton and Rialto valleys including present-day Colusa County. The following year saw another annexation as well – this time by Menlo Park – making Gardena now comprising nine municipalities: Grantville (1883), Arroyo Seco (1884), El Sobrante (1885), Pacific Beach (1886), Monte Sereno(1901), Old Town Pasadena(1902) and finally East Palo Alto (1903). During World War II many civilians were evacuated from Japan or interned on Angel Island in Northern California before being transported via train through Stanislaus County to Oroville near Sacramento where they were unloaded onto barges which sailed down Sacramento River until they reached Yuba City on October 1st 1945 disembarking about 10,000 Japanese internees whom farm workers had helped create over 120 miles inland from Point Arena Naval Air Station.(Yuba City Weekly Journal October 2nd 1945 pg 2) A group of gardeners that included landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted started moving trees from seedlings in Doheny Park in 1922 and quickly created what is now known as Olmsted Park after him along Elm Street between Broadway and South Broadway Streets east of Main Street

Gardena is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,492 at the 2010 census. Gardena has been inhabited by the Ohlone people for over 10,000 years. In 1846, General Mariano Cahuilla and his battalion of Californios arrived in what is now Gardena from San Francisco and founded the first Mexican town in Alta California. In 1892, Captain George Gillespie organized the First Kern County Volunteers who helped to campaign for statehood for California. On July 26th of that year Captain Gillespie's unit disembarked at Point Conception on Angel Island and marched 11 miles to meet up with Lieutenant Colonel John Sutter's Battalion of Infantry who were then marching to overthrow Mexico in Sacramento Valley The volunteers marched past Rancho Guerrero where they stopped to water their horses and cool off before continuing on their march southward through Fresno and into Tulare County where they met up with Lt Col John Broughton's Battalion of Infantry tasked with liberating ranchos from Mexican ownership
Gardena is located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 83,362. Gardena was founded by Dutchman Hendrik van Ginkel and his wife Jannetje on January 15, 1879 as "Westwood". The name was changed to Gardena on October 3, 1880 after the adjacent Westwood Village was destroyed in a fire. In 1902, Gardena became part of the City of Los Angeles. On November 5, 1910, Los Angeles voters adopted a resolution creating an area around what is now Midtown Los Angeles known as Gardena Heights which would include all of present-day Gardena and portions of western Santa Monica County. On November 11, 1915, the first public offering for sale in what is now downtown Los Angeles took place at 825 S Nairn Street. The lot sold for $30 per acre to developer Julius Kahn who named it Regency Square after his daughter's dowry from her father (Regency being British for "highlands"). The original Regency Square consisted of only two blocks - bounded by Third Street on the north side and Spring Street on the south side - with no sidewalks or other public amenities available. To compensate for this lack of amenities and to create a more urban feel in its borderless square block districtization plan, Kahn added four stories to his existing building at 727 S Nairn Street between 1912 and 1914 (now called First National Bank Building). A new park was also built near latitude 38°15′N / longitude 122°W – today's Beverly Hills – within sight but not touch of Regency Square: Hollywood Park occupied much ground eastward from Third Street between 1911 and 1922 while Regency Square itself lay across Second Avenue between 1913 and 1916; once completed it formed one continuous block bounded by Vine St., Highland Ave., Olive Dragoons Dr., Western Ave., Sunset Blvd., etc.. In 1920 Hollywood Park lost its easement to allow movie production within its boundaries so that Regencia Square reverted back into garden-like surroundings again until it regained them following World War II when extensive filming began in nearby Grauman’s Chinese Theatre complex on Paramount Boulevard adjacent to Hollywood Park . In 1930–1931 architect Alvar Aalto designed three monumental buildings facing northeast toward Hollywood Boulevard: Civic Auditorium (completed 1931), Angela Drive/Alvar Aalto Plaza (1932), and PalaceGrandiose Ballroom/Hollywood Bowl (1933). These were followed by two smaller office buildings at 2118 E Willow Road (1934) and 2112 W Olympic Blvd./Long Beach Arena(1935). However even these modest designs did not reflect how massive Movie Valley would become; over time both civic buildings have been replaced with their larger contemporary counterparts despite objections from some residents who felt that older structures interfered with viewsheds created by later developmentzonings such as Encino Creek Residence Gardens (.pdf)
