Gardena, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 924 at the 2010 census. Gardena was platted in 1887 by William H. White and named for his wife, Anna Maria (née Gardena), who arrived from Italy in 1847. The first post office opened in 1888, and the name of the town changed to Gardena on November 15, 1889. The townsite was located on what is now El Monte Boulevard between Canoga Avenue and Orange Avenue east of US 101 during the early 20th century when Valley Street ran parallel to US 101 north of present-day Gardena Boulevard. Valley Street was realigned across Canoga Avenue when it became part of I-5 south of Los Angeles in 1958. In 1930, Pasadena began offering tax breaks to residents who built homes within 5 miles (8 km) of city limits; these were known as "gardena bias". In 1934, Pasadena annexed Gardena and adopted its current name; gardena had been proposed by then City Manager Harry Lahman but never ratified by the city council because it included geographical inaccuracies such as "marginally" placing #9 near Topanga Canyon instead of near Mayfair Park where it should have been positioned proper. When Angelenos voted in Measure M+1 in 1966 to annex most of San Bernardino County into Los Angeles County – including Gardena – significant opposition arose among some local businesses who saw this change as an attack on their industry since many employees resided outside of LASD's boundaries and so couldn't benefit from annexation benefits that could have come with it (i.e., higher property values). After months of heated debate between Mayor George Moscone and Chamber President Francisco Molina over whether or not to annex Gardena into LASD territory/property taxes increased greatly following passage of Measure M+, which took effect on February 1, 1967; gardens were trimmed back significantly until only a few areas remain today that are still home to commercial properties within City Limits: eastbound El Monte Boulevard just past Canoga Ave., eastbound Riverside Drive between Huntington Drive & Via del Libro & westbound Warner Walk Shopping Center off Truxtun Ave.. much like what happened with other nearby municipalities such as Playas de Pacific Palos Verdes & Corona del Mar which also experienced annexation proceedings during this time period when LASD intervened allowing them more breathing room - gardens re-emerged fully annexed into the City Limits after a long legal battle with business groups led by former Mayor Moscone's daughter Ellen DeGeneres - making her oneofthefirst female mayors in LA history[1].
