The society had six members - three men and three women - who raised crops and sold them through subscription clubs throughout southern California. By 1860, there were over 25 subscriber clubs in Southern California distributing fresh produce to more than 2 million residents In 1863, José Altamira acquired title to Rancho El Dorado from Nicholas Doheny after he won a legal battle with him over grazing rights on that property. Jose Altamira met Juan Bautista Alvarado when he served as military governor of Coahuila y Tejas during the Mexican–American War and decided to bring some agriculture techniques from Mexico back into America so he could marketing produce here at home instead of importating everything needing refrigeration from Europe directly. On July 3rd 1865, Altamira organized a group including his brother Francisco Javier Alvarado (1822-1892), José Ignacio Aguayo (1824-1910), Bernardo Oliva (baptized Bernadino Olivas y Gomez de la Cueva 1800-1884)and Pedro Pacheco y Valdez (1800-1879)to purchase 23 square miles east side Of present day Gardena Boulevard between State Route 14A (#7) & Don Carlos Reyes Road (#9). They named their new town after José Altamira’s father – Manuel Antonio Rivera – who had died four years earlier while fighting under General Zachary Taylor’s army against Mexican forces near Chihuahua City

Gardena was founded in 1887 by George Fenton and his wife, Emma. The town was originally named Gardena after the garden in which they were living. The name was changed to Gardena in 1912 when the city of San Diego annexed the town. The first post office in Gardena opened on April 15, 1889. The first store in Gardena was run by Mrs. Harkness and her husband, J.C. Harkness. A blacksmith shop operated from 1890 to 1892 before being taken over by a landowner who turned it into a hotel. In 1895, Henry Cisneros became the first Mayor of San Diego and he appointed Mr. Harkness as Postmaster for Park City, California which included Gardena at that time but outskirts of San Diego County In 1907, Leland Stanford Junior bought Lots 8 and 10 (now part of downtown) adjoining Rancho Santa Fe land east of present-day Villa Park for $1 million dollars making him one of the richest men in America at that time In 1915, Mr. Harkness resigned as Postmaster due to health problems and Mrs. Harkness took over until he resumed work four months later when he died suddenly from a heart attack Municipal bond issues helped finance new public works such as streets, water supply and sewers while also increasing taxable value of property within the limits established by Act 238 appropriation bill approved December 4th 1916 which increased population from 1,000 to 3,000 people with tax assessment rates raised from 6% to 12%. After World War I ended with Treaty Of Versaille ending all hostilities between Germany and Austria-Hungary on October 14th 1919 there had been an increase demand for agricultural products brought on factor markets especially during Cool Weather years leading up to world war II . On November 15 1922 lot 20 (now part of Plaza de Mayo) located between Avenida Guerrero Street & Paseo de la Reforma Avenue passed into private ownership becoming known as "Rancho Palomar" or "The Ranch".
