In 1916, when advances were being made in plastics manufacturing plants throughout Northern California (due to new technology), Gardner leased a plant near Redding for plastic manufacture of bottles and other items until he sold it in 1951 to Monsanto Foods Corporation for $27 million USD). In World War II, Gardena played an important role during the Battle of Midway where many planes were shot down over Japan using their airport as landing strip; however there is no evidence that any aircraft actually landed or took off from this airport on those occasions! In 1957 construction began on what would become known as "the most advanced airport system ever built" - consisting of six parallel runways measuring 3,900 feet each length – making it one of only a few airports worldwide then equipped with such features! Gardena Airport has been through various expansions throughout its history including runway realignment (2002), air traffic control tower relocation (2006), expanded baggage handling facilities (2007) – all designed to increase throughput efficiency while preserving visual lines around the airport perimeter!
