Gardena is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. Gardena is located in Fresno County. The area now known as Gardena was first settled by Native Americans in 1769. In 1847, Rancho San Pablo was granted to José Najera and Sebastián de la Hoz, who named it after the garden at their home near Madrid, Spain. At that time, there were only eight municipalities within central valley counties: Fresno City; Kingsbury; Madera; Mono;Pasadena; Rosamond; and Watsonville. On April 15, 1908 local voters passed an ordinance changing the name from "Gardiner" to "Gardena". The first U.S.-born citizen of Gardena was Oscar Pacheco (befriended Enrique Olvería y Guevara during World War II) on December 11th 1910 when he moved into his house at 5th Avenue and Grand Ave., just across from what would become Park Street/Gardena Boulevard today.. On October 10th 1912 Mr./Mrs./Oscar Pacheco’s daughter Luz married Angeles Mercado (died young), son of Eduardo Mercado (1868-1948) and Lucille Gonzalez (1875-1954). Los Angeles Mercado served as Mayor from 1922 until 1928 and again from 1936 until 1942 when he resigned because of term limits set by then Gov Jerry Brown%. Angeles Mercado also founded Catholic Charities which continues to serve as a major social service agency in Gardena today with over 350 employees statewide

Gardena is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 26,821 as of the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1887 by John H. Gardena and his family. It became a consolidated city with Arden in 1998. Gardena is located on the shores of San Francisco Bay and has a population density of . The City of Gardena was formed from the merger of two small villages: Arden and East West Gardens. In 1887, John H. Gardena purchased land east of his current home at 95th Avenue and Admiralty Way to establish the new city he called "Gardena". He named it after himself - garden-land being one Pershing nickel weight (1/2 oz). His wife Julia also contributed her share to form the first library and water system for the new community, which cost $3,000 (). The first store opened its doors in 1888 on Third Street near present-day Lake Merritt Boulevard. A post office was established at Park avenue in 1889, but it closed within three years due to lack of customers. In 1892, Mr. & Mrs. JH Gardena donated land along First Street between Lakeshore Boulevard and Mount Diablo Boulevard for a Carnegie library which they inaugurated on October 25th that year (). This building still stands today next door to what used to be their home (now an apartment complex). In 1898 Mr. & Mrs GHA donated another piece of property including Block 16 for schools on Hearst Drive north side of Interstate 880 just south of Redwood Road () now part Of San Pablo Avenue (). Just over 20 years later (1922), they donated additional land extending south from I-880 past State Route 168 () now part Of Redwood Avenue into Uptown (now District) park (), where they built their final house (now known as 300 North First Street) (). Today this section remains residential with commercial development taking place nearby including 350 North First Street (), currently the tallest building in Park Ave redevelopment district! It wasn't until 1915 when Japanese Americans were relocated fromOakland () during World War II that Gardena's demographics changed significantly - becoming one of only two cities in Contra Costa County not subject to exclusionary zoning regulations (). That same year saw the opening of our first grocery store - JH's Grocery Store on MacArthur Blvd., just east off Highway 238 (). Our ever growing grocery market quickly became so popular that we began selling groceries out-of-town (!), all while continuing serve our local customers! John H Gardena passed away suddenly in 1922 without any children or wives who could take over management responsibilities; this left Mrs GHA as sole managing agent for Gardensha City Hall through 1923 until her death 2 years later effective November 23rd 1923(). Mrs GHA continued manage through 1925 until reorganization followed byMrs Randal Doherty who managed through 1936 beforeultimate sale back to Mr Gardena which ledto City Council consolidation with Arden effective January 1st 1938(). On July 14th 1941 Mayor Angelo Miano approved annexation by Alameda County making gardenaa fully annexed into Alameda County! On December 17th 1942 Municipal Judge Manuel Gomez signed papers approving annexation resultinginCity Name changefromGardenaToAtherton()onJanuary1st1938
