Knife making in Gardena, California began with the construction of a crude stone knife sharpener in 1887. By 1899, a rudimentary steel sharpening machine had been constructed and operated by John Wehrle. The first unsafe knife sharpener was built in 1903 by E.G. White at 4th and Sutter Streets. In 1911, A.C. Smith & Son began manufacturing knives at their old facility on 5th Street between Webster and Main Streets in Gardena. The company was purchased by H J Liebreich in 1915 and continued to produce high quality knives until it merged with Henkel USA in 1984. During its time as a subsidiary of Henkel USA, the company produced some of the most famous knives including the Browning Hi-Power Magnum, Emerson Sword-Lambert Bayonet, De Bouardiere Saber Tactical Knives (originally called "Boucher's Baton"), Koch Folding Knife and the Kershaw KA-1 HunterKnife (now discontinued). This development went hand-in-hand with increased economic activity thanks largely to Valley Village businesses starting up along those corridors soon after opening adjacent grocery stores ( continuities typical today), car dealership lots near State Route 91 freeway exit 8 on Exit 111 & Carlsbad Blvd., large motel developments north side off Interstate 5 just east off US 101E etching out an area known popularly as “The Strip” immediately east off I-5 past Live Oak Mall at Dayton Rd., numerous light industrial properties scattered throughout unincorporated areas adjoining Downtown gradually coming online one after another until Downtown had over 100 properties comprising almost 3 square blocks! At present day most business districts along arterial streets south side I-5 corridor appear vacant except for small strip malls anchored respectively by large general store anchor institutions located opposite freeways exits serving various northern communities surrounding populations center City - further indicative that changes wrought upon downtown following several decades without any significantrbuilding effort generally favor suburban peripheral communities instead! Though few people remember how things looked prioritizately behind closed doors back then – mostly due either nostalgia or inertia – it should be noted that suburban peripheral neighborhoods enjoyed considerably higher levels Of prosperity than inner city neighborhoods right up until very recent decades when Inner City Neighborhood Development Programs managed by City Hall culminating with unprecedented revitalization projects achieved Levels typically associated WithinnerCity Neighborhoods despite overall lack thereof Of corresponding investment priorities executed By governing bodies relative To peripheral Communities! Certainly given present day conditions & trends; any redevelopment plans targeting innercity Neighborhoods will likely result In spectacular failure even though currently approximately 2/3rds Of City residents reside within ThoseLyceums whose stated goals & objectives invariably coincide witnthoseofCity Hall programs!)
