Gardena is a small town in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Modesto County and is east of the city of Modesto. Gardena's ZIP code is 94548. The name "Gardena" derives from the word "garden," meaning a setting where flowers may be seen or grown. A post office called Gardena was established in 1876, and remained in operation until 1943. The community was platted in 1902 by John Waddell and James Hartsfield. In 1907, Jock Mahoney opened a general store and wagon shop on Main Street which became known as Mahoney's Grocery until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1916, seven men from San Francisco founded the American Legion Post #2 at what is now Park Avenue and Broadway (now Big Bear Boulevard). They named their organization Gardena Legionnaires after their hometown of Gardena, California; however they did not open an club house there because they were not authorized to do so by the legion’s national headquarters in San Francisco. In 1924, Hollywood star Mary Pickford donated land to be used for a new high school which she co-founded with her husband Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Sr.. When that school burned down in 1932, Pickford donated another tract of land to become Flowery Branch High School which still stands today as one of the most popular high schools in Northern California due to its excellent education opportunities for students from all walks of life including those who are economically disadvantaged or have special needs. In 1955 Mayor Harry Helms proposed that Gardena rename itself "Modesto".
