Gardena, California was founded in 1856 by brothers George and John Gardena as a small town on the eastern edge of San Joaquin Valley. The Gardenas were prominent Democrats who played an important role in early California politics. In 1872, they sold their holdings in the town to James Irvine for $2,000. Irvine developed what is now Gardena into a thriving agricultural center with large holdings in hay and cattle farming. In 1899, the Gardenas donated land to the city of Los Angeles for use as a public park. The garden was renamed Los Angeles Park after both George and John Gardena died in 1899. The Park has been home to many famous people including Hollywood film stars such as Rudolph Valentino and Clark Gable, cereal tycoon J.P. Morgan and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The city of Gardena passed an ordinance limiting vehicle traffic on State Route 99 to two cars per hour from 1918 until it was repealed by Proposition 187 in 1992 following the Rodney King riots that took place there during the anti-immigrant campaign of 1990. After repeal, SR 99 became a major highway through the park with high volumes of traffic using it for recreation instead of exploring its natural resources or walking/running around its beautiful surroundings.
Gardena was founded in 1881 by Captain Edward H. Gardena and his wife, Emma. The town of Gardena became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1951. In 1964, the CDP was renamed North Gardena after the community's then-mayor, Edwin J. North.
