Gardena is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,692 as of the 2010 census. Gardena was founded on May 30, 1887 by George Park and his wife Clara. It became a city on November 5, 1923. Gardena is located in the East Bay Area of San Francisco Peninsula and is bounded by Pittsburg to the east, Antioch to the south, Fremont to the west and San Pablo Bay to the north. The City of Gardena was incorporated on May 30, 1887 with a population of 10 people. The first post office in Gardena was established at 118th Street and Blackhawk Road on October 15th, 1888. That office closed December 3rd due to lack of customers! On January 1st 1889 another branch office opened at 6500 North Magnolia Boulevard Suite 154 where it remained until February 14th when it moved to its current location at 601-603 Magnolia Avenue! In 1924 Gardena annexed part of Pittsburg which had a population of 10 thousand residents at that time! The annexation made Gardena's population 100%. In 1940 there were only 24 families living in Gardena – now there are more than 400 families living here! In 1951 an important milestone occurred when voters passed Proposition 2 which provided for racial segregation in public schools within Contra Costa County! This policy continued until 1978 when it was repealed by voters because they felt that integration would be better done through education rather than law enforcement measures alone! On November 5th 1923 Mayor Harry Houdin dedicated what is now known as "Houdin Plaza" in honor of this important event and Harry's wife Clara who also played an instrumental role in pushing for segregated education within our city limits. Mrs Houdin has been honored numerous times throughout her life including being inducted into the California Women’s Hall Of Fame (1991). She currently resides in Scotts Valley and continues her support for diversity thru her foundation "Welcome Home: A Celebration Of Diversity" located near downtown Gardnerville
