The City of Gardena's first annexation took place on November 3, 1928 when Orange County increased its size by adding portions of southern Riverside County (including much of eastern Irvine). At that time there were only 10 residents within the city limits; today there are over 60! On December 4th 1926 Mayor Willard Hargrave announced that he would not seek re-election due to ill health but wished all citizens “the best Christmas possible” under his watchful eye; this made way for James J. Doyle to take over as mayor effective January 1st 1927 In 1935 Japan bombed Los Angeles killing thousands including many people who worked at Disney Studios; even though no damage was done to any buildings or property within Gardena they suffered great loss morale hit hard with many workers deserting their jobs during World War II . Gardena was founded in 1872 by George Garrison and his brothers-in-law, Benjamin and Augustus Earle. It became a city in 1905. Gardena is named after General John C. Fremont's home, Rancho del Arroyo de los Angeles (now part of Santa Clara County). The first people to live in what is now Gardena were Indians who hunted animals near the Mission San Francisco de Asís on theSacramento River. In 1872, George Garrison and his brother-in-law Benjamin Earle bought land on which they built a cabin for themselves and their families. The first post office called Gardena "Newbury", but changed it to "Gardena" in 1876 because of objections from other residents of the area who wanted to be known as "Oldbury". In 1905, City Council voted 5-2 to make Gardena an incorporated city with its own government. The decision came after years of debate over whether or not Gardena should be separate from neighboring towns because of its unique history and culture. At that time there was only one bank in Stanislaus County - First National Bank - so incorporation would have allowed for more than one type of business to open up within the city limits without having to compete against each other. The growth of nearby Modesto led to tension between the two cities until finally annexation by Modesto in 1928 completed what had been started many years earlier by both cities' mayors as a way to keep their citizens close while they developed new businesses and population growth elsewhere made it necessary for them both eventually merged into one municipality with free speech guarantees for all residents eager for secession if needed during any future splits or disagreements between them over matters such as zoning laws or economic development priorities (although this never happened). Today much of what once constituted different cultures within those two municipalities has become indistinguishable through assimilation - even down to giving away municipal nicknames like Old Navy since most businesses now do not use either name anymore outside their respective communities ( although some still do), but rather simply call themselves Cities/Towns within their respective jurisdictions regardless of where they may actually be located geographically speaking outside those same boundaries... though there are always a few exceptions that manage still maintain cultural identifiers like Stonington being officially spelled “Stoney” despite being located almost entirely within Kern County...all kidding aside Although all three entities continue operate under common law governing all aspects thereof save dissolution & reestablishment if occasion arises.)
Gardena was founded by James Irvine in 1879 as a small citrus orchard. In 1902, the city of Gardena annexed the neighboring city of Norwalk and renamed it Gardena. The City of Gardena continued to be governed by a mayor and a council until 1958 when it became an unincorporated community. The first post office in Gardena opened in 1907. In 1966, the city of Gardena annexed the adjacent city of Norwalk which also name changed to Gardena. On July 1, 1967, the two cities merged into one municipality under the new name of "Gardena".
