Gardena is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 26,571 at the 2010 census. Gardena is known for its gun industry and its many firearm manufacturers. The city has been noted as an important center of the firearms trade since before the turn of the century. In 1868, Wm. Hallett began manufacturing rifles and pistols in gardena and soon became one of the leading weapons makers in America. In 1916, he gave up his business to focus on research and development for his company's new shotguns which helped shape American shotgun design during World War I. Many other famous names have passed through Gardena including Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester) president Abraham Crouse who opened a store here in 1921, Edward Riflesman (Red Eagle Firearms Corporation), owner/founder of Red Eagle TVA Electric Power Corporation (now Energy Exploration Inc.), Herb Cohen (Herb Cohen & Son), co-founder of David Gun Co.,Inc., current CEO & Director at Desert Sun Trading Company LLC In recent years, much attention has been paid to gardena's gun industry with several high profile events taking place here such as "Gun show 2020" which attracted more than 8,000 exhibitors from around the world last year; "The Open House" held each month at various business locations throughout town; and "Open Air Shooters Expo" which attracts shooters from all over Southern California every fall. In addition to these events there are regular exhibits and meetings featuring local manufacturers as well as representatives from other industries such as ammunition dealerships and security companies. Gardena, California is located in Fresno County, California. The population was 565 at the 2000 census. The town was founded by Elisha Peake and his family in 1847 as a trading post on the banks of the Feather River. In 1855, gardena became an incorporated town with a government. Gardena prospered as a agricultural center due to its irrigation system and its location between the San Joaquin Valley and the Sacramento Valley. In 1902, it was chosen as the county seat of Fresno County, but this decision was overturned on November 8th, 1902 by voters who chose Stockton instead. The first settler in what is now Gardena were James Irvine and his brother-in-law George Armstrong Cuppy. James Irvine had married Cuppy's daughter and Desdemona Irwin had married George Armstrong Strong who owned some land in what is now Midtown Los Angeles. However, these early settlers did not live there long because they were displaced by more recent arrivals from Northern California including Chinese immigrants who arrived during the 1850s when Southern Californians were trying to secede from California under President Buchanan's administration. The first significant development in Gardena took place around 1857 when two men named John Sutter and Jedediah Smith came across gold near present day Fillmore Street and developed an operation that produced flour for local merchants until 1865 when they abandoned their diggings because of competition from Mexico City's Friant Mill which began producing flour commercially at that time. Another important event happened on October 26th, 1861 when American Civil War veteran General Edmund Kirby Smith set up headquarters at Fillmore Street after being discharged from duty at Fort Yuma near Phoenixville Pennsylvania where he had been stationed since February 1862 following his victory over Major General Stephen Kearny at what is now known as Battle of Gettysburg south of Winchester Pennsylvania.
