The history of Gardena can be traced back to 1872 when a group of settlers from Stockton crossed over into Kern County from Nevada. They named their new settlement Gardena after Mr. & Mrs. George Gardiner, who had sponsored their crossing. The first post office in Gardena was opened in 1875. By 1888, there were six businesses in town with a total payroll of $5,000. In 1903, the California State Legislature designated part of what is now northeast corner of Township No. 3 (now northwest corner) as Parkland which became one of Gardena's original neighborhoods within that parkland area designation In 1906, a two-story school building was built on Main Street in downtown Gardena for use as an agricultural fairgrounds and exhibition hall for local farmers and others interested in exhibiting their products before buyers during that year's county fair being staged at Bakersfield Downs Race Course on April 14th-16th A fire destroyed this building on October 15th 1907; it reopened January 8th 1908 having been rebuilt with Federal funds On November 5th 1916 local resident John Pemberton donated land adjacent to his home northeast corner Third Street between Court Avenue and Park Lane for what would become Flower Bowl Place golf course On March 2nd 1920 Robert Hildebrandt donated land southwest corner First Street between Court Avenue and Municipal Drive for what would become Gadsden Stadium football stadium

White as a town on the east side of what is now Lake Isabella County. It was named for Captain James Fenton of the USS Constitution who served in World War II as aide-de-camp to General Douglas MacArthur and later became a U.S. Senator from California. In 1974, Gardena annexed part of unincorporated Butte County to its north; the annexation created a second city with its own government and economy separate from that of Gardena proper The city was incorporated on February 17, 1901, following the passage of an act by the State Legislature creating municipal corporations within Kern County subject only to state law (the first City Charter had been passed in 1890). The new City Corporation had 14 members appointed by mayor and council members chosen at-large through election attended by all citizens over 21 years old living within their municipality boundaries plus two citizens appointed by each county commissioner - one representing each seat on the local board of supervisors - to serve until they reach retirement age or withdrawal from office; no citizen could be elected more than once (this limitation remained until 1933 when Mayor Charles Wohl announced he would retire after six terms).
