Gardena, California is a town in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 18,570 at the 2000 census. Gardena was founded in 1919 by Major George Fenton and his wife Gertrude. It became an incorporated city in 1951. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 19,808. Gardena has a variety of industries including agriculture, manufacturing and services. It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Fresno and 50 miles (80 km) north of Sacramento. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to reach Gardena were surveyors sent by Captain James Cook in 1769 and they named it after Giovanniardini, an Italian general who had fought for Spain in North America during the War of 1812. The first permanent settler arrived in 1852, when Hiram Cobb built a log cabin on what is now known as East Second Street. In 1865, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill on San Joaquin River west of present-day Gardena. By 1870s, many residents had moved to Gardena because of its fertile soil and opportunities for agriculture. In 1929, Hollywood film producer Harry Cohn bought land near present-day Gardena Boulevard and Vine Street for $1 million dollars; he would later develop what would become Hollywood Park. In 1945, General Motors Corporation established a manufacturing plant in nearby Hanford which would eventually lead to GM's shutdown of its entire line outside California in 1994 due to pollution concerns. Before then, Hanford was one of the largest nuclear power plants in the world with over 2 million tons/year released into local soil from reprocessing plutonium from spent fuel rods accumulated since World War II until 1978 when all UENI sites closed down due to concerns about radioactivity levels at those sites following Three Mile Island accident). White as a 165-acre (63 ha) agricultural community named for his birthplace on Long Island, New York. The first post office in Gardena opened in 1888, and the first store was built in 1889. By 1912, white had developed nearby Rancho Mirage into an upscale resort town with hotels, casinos and other commercial facilities. By 1935, however, most of what would become Gardena had been annexed by neighboring Rancho Mirage; only the original White House complex remained within its bounds until it was annexed again by Rancho Santa Margarita in 1959. White died in 1922 and his estate divided among his children; many of them managed to maintain some degree of control over the town through their ownership or management of key businesses and land holdings until after World War II when ranch hands began moving into the area from Southern California to take advantage of more fertile soil and cheaper housing prices than offered elsewhere in the Central Valley during that time period
