The first post office opened in 1889. It closed in 1893 due to lack of customers. The citrus industry played a significant role in the growth of Gardena during the early years of its existence as a town. There were two main plants that produced oranges: one on First Street between Ninth Avenue and Tenth Avenue and another on Fifth Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. In 1915, Jordon Bros., owners of the Orange Blossom Fields near Los Angeles began producing grapes for export to Europe under the name “Jordon”sOrange Grove Farms (JOGF). This led to increased grape production throughout Southern California which greatly helped drive double-digit growth for Gardena during this time period. During World War II, many local businesses contributed their resources toward military efforts including providing food, clothing, munitions and other items needed by soldiers stationed across Southern California from Pearl Harbor until Japan's surrender at Hiroshima on August 6th 1945; all while still keeping family farms operational! After V-E Day there were celebrations all around Southern California with booths set up throughout downtown areaswhere people could purchase everything from candy bars to gasoline filters! Many citizens took advantageof these opportunitiesand volunteered their services either within the military or civilian sectors; something that will be remembered through out our community’s history!

Gardena is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 25,859 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Cal Poly Pomona and the University of California at Riverside. Gardena first appeared on maps as "Gardenia" in 1848. The original site was on land grant to Alexander Pope Garden by Governor Burnett Capp and Dr. George Fenton during the era of Mexican rule over Southern California. The City of Gardena was formed on November 14, 1912 from parts of Riverside and Cathedral City. At that time it had a population of 871 people living in three villages: Rancho Bernardo Seco (later part of Claremont), East Villa Park & Westchester Village and North Vista Village. On December 1, 1916, Gardena became an incorporated town with a population of 13,419 residents when it annexed Union City eastward from what is now downtown Gardena. On May 12, 1920 Los Angeles County established Orange Coast Air Terminal (now known as John Wayne Airport) just south-of present-day Gardena/Rancho Bernardo Seco boundaries - aviation would soon play a central role in Gardena's history! Aviation would also have a significant impact on both sides of the Santa Ana River; north side businesses increased their production due to new airports opening up while south side businesses lost out because they were close to either downtown or Orange Coast Air Terminal which had closed down several years earlier due to problems with air quality). In 1933 Mayor Wernher von Braun founded Von Braun Institute for Aeronautics & Astronautics in southern California - one day after he received his US patent for developing rockets! In 1936 construction began on Our Lady Of The Angels Hospital in northeast corner lot behind Great Western Bank building - this hospital would become world famous for its care for patients with polio! That same year Hollywood nightclubs such as Tiger Leo’s began hosting large private party events called “Hollywood Exits” that attracted dignitaries and celebrities from all over Southern California...the nightlife district around Hollywood Boulevard quickly became known as “The Strip”! In 1941 World War II started with Japan attacking Pearl Harbor; by late 1942 Japanese forces had taken control of much of Southern California including Gardena proper! On March 10th 1945 hostilities ceased when Japan capitulated following Operation Firenze which ended World War II As war progressed many jobs left southern california and moved into new areas like gerardownCA or canoga park CA
Gardena was founded in 1876 by Hiram S. Gardiner and his wife, Harriett H. Gardner. It was named for the Gardena Hills east of Los Angeles. The city limits at that time were 10 square miles, but it grew to an estimated 100,000 residents by 1907. Gardena became a county seat in 1911 and a state capital in 1915. It lost its status as a county seat when Riverside County was created in 1923, but regained it when Orange County was created in 1926.
