Gardena is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 139,951 at the 2010 census. Gardena became a city on January 1, 2004. It takes its name from nearby Gardena Rancho de las Encinas, which was founded by Franciscan friars in 1827. Gardena was founded in 1887 as a small agricultural community on the east bank of the San Jacinto River near what is now downtown Gardena. In 1902, it became an incorporated city with a population of 30,000 people. Gardena annexed portions of Riverside County in 1957 and has since grown to be one of Southern California's most populous cities with over 100,000 residents. The city had been designated as a global center for renewable energy technologies by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in 2006 and has been home to several high-profile green tech companies such as Emerson Electric Co., Enercon Corporation and First Solar Incorporated (formerly SunPower). The first indications that Gardena might become a significant center for technological innovation came about during World War II when local businesses began developing radar technology used by military commanders to guide artillery rounds across battlefields. By 1948, many important pioneers in electronic engineering had relocated to Gardena and started their own firms including Western Electric Company (later Alcatel-Lucent), GE Aviation (later Boeing), Motorola Electronics Corporation ( later Nortel Networks) and Philips SE (later Philips Aventis Pharma AG). Other prominent early founders included Clifford Berryman who helped found Alcatel-Lucent; Jerome Littman who co-founded GE Aviation; Seymour Cray who developed new computer algorithms; Tom Glaser who invented digital photography; Bob Kahn who co-founded Motorola Electronics Corporation; Jack Welch whose company built or acquired several major electronics brands including GE Aviation and Nortel Networks among others. During the 1960s through 1980s almost all leadingmanufacturing companies moved out of Riverside County for reasons including political turmoil within LA County combined with skyrocketing housing prices throughout Northern California. Gardena is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Gardena is located on the eastern edge of San Pablo Bay, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Berkeley and 20 miles (30 km) north of Oakland. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gardena were Spanish explorers who landed on Angel Island in 1776 and named it La Cañada de Oro because of its rich gold values. In 1824, Rancho Rincon del Norte was granted to José María Moraga and his wife Agustina Cisneros by Governor Manuel Micheltorena for their land beyond the current city limits. The Moragas started a ranch that became one of the largest and most productive in Contra Costa County. In 1881, John Sutter founded the American Fur Company here with help from General John Pershing. The company built new townships including Gardena in 1902 as part of its efforts to expand fur-trading operations statewide. By 1906, Gardena had become an agricultural center with many fruit orchards and vineyards around downtown. Increasingly since World War II, foundry production has replaced agriculture as mainstay for local economy; but there are still some small businesses in agriculture based on produce sales such as fresh produce market open Saturdays from 9am to 5pm
Gardena, California was founded by Captain George A. Smith on November 12, 1846 as the town of Rancho Fuego de la Bahía. The name was changed to Gardena on October 15, 1849, when it became a part of the newly created Mexican state of Alta California. On December 1, 1850, the town passed under American control and was renamed Gardena after James P. Gardiner, who had purchased and donated land in the area in 1845. The first post office at Gardena opened on November 12th of that year. The first settler in Gardena was Isaac Swayne who arrived with his family from Connecticut two weeks prior to that date. A second group of settlers followed shortly thereafter and by early January 1851 all but four families were living in the community. By March 5th only one family remained in Gardena- John Bowerman and his wife Catherine Hennessey Bowerman. In total there were 21 residents living in Gardena during its initial days as a settlement. By 1860 there were 100 acres (40ha) of agricultural land within what is now Gardena limits; however only 20% or so was cultivated due to lack of irrigation facilities at that time due to distance from other settlements and also because many farmers opted for sheep husbandry instead due to available water resources near San Francisco Bay
