Gardena, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,715 at the 2000 census. Gardena is located just north of Fresno and east of Bakersfield. The town straddles the Kern River on its eastern border. The western boundary is formed by hills that provide excellent views of the San Joaquin Valley to the south and Mono Lake to the west. The first Europeans to visit Gardena were land grantees from New Mexico who arrived in 1847. They named their new settlement after General Antonio José de Gardena y Costilla, who had commanded an expedition against Apache Indians in 1846-47. In 1861, two weeks before Christmas, Captain James Hogg and his men discovered gold deposits near present-day Gardena while exploring for a new route across Yuba Pass into Nevadaan territory. This discovery led to increased traffic through Yuba Canyon and stimulated development in nearby Fresno and Bakersfield which soon followed suit with grants for Rancho Seco (now part of Sacramento) and Rancho Rinconcito (now part of Stockton). In 1872, Atherton Wintrobe bought 180 acres northwest of present-day Gardena from Rancher Manuel Nieto for $1 per acre. Wintrobe named his property Whitney Ranch after Whitney Houston, then singer with Motown Records band The Supremes. As time passed additional properties were acquired including: 168 acres northeast of Whitney; 106 acres southwest ofcurrent-day Gardena; 35 acres southeastofpresent-day downtown; 8 parcels along current day PCH(I can't find what street it is now), all east or westside dirt roads until 1946 when they became part of today's city limits; 3 parcels north side Of I Street from old post office building until 1978 when they became part of City Limits also known as Riverside Drive Atherton Wintrobe died in 1886 but his son Harry Atherton Winton continued ranching operations until 1923 when he sold all his holdings except 2 tracts totaling 4 blocks NW corner First & Second Streets between G&M Roads - this parcel became home site for Cal Poly Pomona during WW II

Gardena, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 23,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County and home to the University of California, Riverside. Gardena was founded in 1887 by James Fenton and named after his plantation in Louisiana. In 1907 it became an incorporated town. On November 5, 1959, Gardena became a city with its own government and services. The oldest residents of Gardena date back to 1887 when James Fenton settled on land east of what is now downtown Gardena with his wife Anna Maria Gossett Fenton and their three children: Johnnie (1886-1957), Mildred (1888-1971) and Floyd (1890-1973). In 1907 James Gossett's grandson Harold Halsey bought part of the original Rancho Viejo grant from Doniphan heirs for $5 per acre ($40 total). This rancho extended from present day Hollywood Boulevard south to Utopia Road where it crossed into Kern County about 8 miles west of today's downtown Gardena on what is now known as Redondo Beach Boulevard. Harold Halsey had married Jennie Doniphan who also owned land east of Hollywood Boulevard near present day Elvira Elementary School; they resided there until her death in 1949. In 1919 Parkman Jorgensen purchased choice lots adjacent to then existing Dumbarton Oaks estate located just northeast of modern Gardena on SR 134 which he later renamed "Jorgensen Oaks". He sold most or all of this property including 10 acres that formed the nucleus for much later development that reached north to Highway 99W just south of Hansen’s Crossing Restaurant before turning northeast onto I-805 soon after Sepulveda Blvd., becoming Orinda annexed by Gardena on October 1st, 1984 following passage thereof through both chambers within little more than a week following passage by then Mayor Harry Sainz Jr.. I-805/SR 134 would become one continuous arterial corridor through much later City streets such as San Fernando Valley Streets while many current residential neighborhoods were developed along portions only slightly less wide like Open Space Preserve/Pine Avenue Narrows extending southeast past Hansen’s Crossing thence northwest past SR 134 housing subdivisions built side by side right next door some blocks away from our homes thru interlocking streetscapes we call “The Wilderness” Today We Can Recall Our Early History Only By What Happened Next
