In 1875, Gardena was founded as a small town in the southeast corner of Los Angeles County. The area that is now Gardena was then sparsely populated and consisted of only a few scattered homes. The town's first store, built on what is now Hollywood Boulevard, sold supplies for settlers living in the surrounding hills. Gardena grew rapidly after it became an incorporated municipality in 1876. By 1880, the population had reached 2,000 people and by 1890 it had grown to 5,000 people. In 1912, Gardena annexed part of east Los Angeles City and its growth continued into the 1920s when east Los Angeles annexed much of west central Orange County. In 1923, Gardena voters passed a proposition to make the city an independent city effective February 1st of that year. On November 3rd of that year, following years of planning and fundraising by Mayor Arthur Haines and City Manager Harry Aherns, Gardena became an independent city with its own government with Harry Fenton as mayor and John D'Angelo as City Councilman. The original downtown core located near State Street was developed into an upscale residential area which continues to thrive today as one of the most affluent areas in Southern California. Other older neighborhoods were redeveloped over time into more affordable housing developments such as Mission Hills (now part of El Segundo), La Cienega Heights (now part of Irvine) and Balboa Park (now part of Santa Clarita). Today's downtown core is home to many large businesses including Macy's Department Store; Honda dealerships; numerous restaurants including red Lobster restaurant; Barnes & Noble bookstore; Staples pawn shop; Apple Inc.; Home Depot; KFC fast food restaurant; Starbucks Coffee Corporation.; Rite Aid pharmacy; Sony Pictures Entertainment studios etc., while other older neighborhoods have been redeveloped into smaller streetscape communities with single-family homes/condos replaced by larger multifamily dwellings or apartment complexes featuring multiple levels/skylights/garden roofs etc..
