Gardena, California is a city located in Kern County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 382. Gardena is known for its palm trees and white picket fences. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gardena were Spanish missionaries in 1821. The name "Gardena" likely derives from the Nahuatl word "gantero," meaning `to cultivate`. It was part of Rancho Verde de las Palmas Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Alvarado by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on November 14, 1829. In 1853, John Siskind built a small adobe penitentiary here which served as a prison until it closed in 1902; thereafter it continued as an agricultural fairgrounds used by local farmers and ranchers until conversion to city status led to development around 1915-16 when four blocks north of the old penitentiary became Municipal Park District No. 2 with City Hall as its first building and Business/Industry Districts 3-5 developments (later renamed Downtown) were erected around that time including two large hotels - The Masonic Temple (now Regency Ballroom) and The Plaza Hotel - before becoming an inner-city black neighborhood during prohibition days when alcohol production increased thereabouts. Large numbers of African Americans worked in the nearby breweries during prohibition because no other industry would employ them; many went on to form their own businesses after repeal. Negroes also labored variously on citrus farms adjacent to downtown until they were hired out by white landowners following World War II when those fields became available for housing sets aside specifically for them called "Negro Housing Units". In 1957 Gardena Municipal Airport opened east of downtown serving primarily motels operated by transient workers who stayed along I-880 between Stockton and Los Angeles while construction proceeded near downtown; within three years all motels had been closed except one which reopened as Anvil Motel & Casino shortly thereafter vacated by Apple computer founders Steve Jobs and Wernher Von Braun in 1974 upon their move from Cupertino southward into what would become Silicon Valley

Gardena is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Kern Mountains and is northeast of Bakersfield. The first Europeans to visit Gardena were Jesuit missionaries who prospected for gold in 1846-47. In 1850, James Waugh built a post office at what is now Gardena and named it after his native parish in Scotland. A year later, Waugh's brother founded an oil business here and name it Waugh Oil & Refining Company. The company produced gasoline, kerosene and other fuels until 1923 when it merged with Esso Petroleum Corporation to become ExxonMobil Corporation. In 1865, myrtle trees were planted by George Hargrave as part of a landscape design project known as "The Outlet". They remain one of Gardena's most popular attractions today. Gardena was incorporated on February 17, 1876 under the name of Elmira Heights; but changed its name to Gardena on May 4 that year due to objections from nearby Bakersfield which had organized as Kern County two days earlier. On July 1st 1915 incorporation papers were filed with the State of California for a new city charter incorporating the community of Gardena east of Bakersfield by then Acting Sheriff Harry Pendergast (now Superintendent) after he ordered law enforcement officers not to interfere with local social dances being held at Ralston Park near downtown Bakersfield by members of the Knights Templar society because they objected to any interracial dating within their order
Gardena is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It was founded in 1887 on the site of a small adobe military encampment called Campo de la Reina (Queen's Camp). The first white person to settle in Gardena was Hiram S. Bemis, who arrived in 1887. He built the first store and home there. The original name of Gardena was "Campo del Rey" (King's Camp). In 1893, Mayor John Gifford changed the name to Gardena after he became interested in its potential as a citrus-growing town. The suffix -ana means "city" or "town" in Spanish, and so Gardena became one of several cities located near Los Angeles County's central business district. In 1923, the City Council voted to annex portions of Hawthorne and Lancaster Counties into the city; this annexation increased Gardena's population by over 25%. In 1925, voters approved increasing the size of Gardena from 2 square miles to 10 square miles due to its growth and development as an agricultural center for Southern California. In 1942, during World War II, General Douglas MacArthur set up his command headquarters at nearby Montecito Army Airfield; many of MacArthur's top aides live in nearby Montecito now. When MacArthur moved from his original headquarters at Fort Myer near Arlington Virginia after the war ended, he left behind his furniture and equipment which was stored at that airfield awaiting shipment back to America. That furniture later traveled down Interstate 405 through Culver City and then Pasadena before arriving at Mt Vernon Mansion where it still stands today as part of American history museum collection
