These humans would need to build houses and leave their families behind.

Gardena, California was founded in 1846 by George Gardena and his wife, Catharine. The original site of the town has been lost to time, but it is believed that Gardena was located on the present day corner of Fourth Street and Second Avenue. It is said that Gardena was named after a small stream called "Gardenia" which ran through the town. After years of growth and development, Gardena became an important railroad center in Northern California. In 1916, the city was renamed Gardena after Arthur J. Gardella, Jr., who had played an instrumental role in its early development as a railroad town. The city experienced significant population growth during World War II with the influx of soldiers and their families. While most of the manufacturing Base-COastalommunication Center (BCC) closed down during the war due to Section 10b Prohibition laws, some business continued including a foundry that manufactured munitions for World War II and later for other countries.During post-war years there were efforts to bring back industry to Gardena by creating new businesses such as Home Depot (1994), ABC store (1996), Safeway (1999), Ford dealership (2001) and more recently KFC restaurant(2006). However, these ventures have not been successful and have led to different types of joblessness among residents which has hindered economic development over time. Today much of what once made Gardena an important transportation hub is now unoccupied land aside from scattered homes and businesses along Fourth Street between Second Avenue and Fifth Avenue
Gardena was founded in 1881 by George and Anna Haskell. The Haskels were a prominent local family who had originated in nearby Pasadena. They built the first home in Gardena, which still stands today. The Haskells were also responsible for developing the city's commercial district, which now includes many of its towering office buildings and shopping centers.
