Garden Grove is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. Garden Grove is located on an area of 1,883 square miles (4,836 km2). It is bounded by Anaheim to the south and west, Anaheim Hills to the north and east, and Fullerton to the northwest. The first recorded mention of Garden Grove was in 1835 when it was part of Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana. In 1872 it became a municipality with a population of 12 residents. On July 15th 1912 Garden Grove changed its name from Santiago to Garden Grove after becoming one of 10 cities in Southern California that adopted this change. One reason for this change may have been because there had been much growth in Los Angeles County since 1906 when Santa Ana became part of that county. When annexation occurred for Garden Grove it did so at precisely the same time as Los Angeles County grew by over 100%. In 1922 Fruitvale Avenue (now Miracle Mile Boulevard) was designated as the city's main thoroughfare. That year saw other important milestones such as construction of City Hall and Park District Headquarters; when Fort MacArthur closed its gates in 1945 and were reopened as Disneyland®, Downtown opened up with more development along 5TH Street between Gadsden and Western avenues – which would later become known as Pioneer Place®

Garden Grove is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States and has been described as "the melting pot of America." The city was founded on April 20, 1887 by James Hahn and his wife Anna Gillett Hahn. It became a city on December 4, 1909. Garden Grove's motto is "Unity through diversity." The first German settlers in what would become Orange County arrived in 1853. By 1860 there were over 100 Germans living in Anaheim County and many more scattered around Southern Anaheim and Fullerton counties. On February 14, 1887 James Hahn purchased 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) of land at Seventh Street and Vine Avenue for $1 cash from George Eberhart. This land had been previously owned by two brothers who had died in a wagon accident while transporting goods to their farm near Fullerton two years earlier. Prior to this date full or partial ownership of any land within the City limits had been vested with either James Hahn himself or his father-in-law David Starr Blumberg who lived on Vine Avenue between Sunset Boulevard and North Park Place until his death on July 10th 1865 aged 71 years old which left Blumberg sharecroppers 7 acres (27 ha) north of corner Seventh Street & Vine Avenue divided among five sons: Alanson (1864-1935), Harry (1866-1948), Josephine (1868-1945), Charles Fenton (1870-1948) - all but one born after 1850 - plus three daughters: Emma Lillian treehauer(baptized 1888died 1940a nurse at Mt Sinai Hospital; married 1914 Dr Franklin Bendixen; died unmarried 1942); Bertha Belle Ellsworth(baptized 1889died 1945). Mrs Hahn also received title to 8 lots south of corner Seventh Street & Vine Avenue eastward towards Diamond Row which formed part of her husband's inheritance from his father Jesse Starr Blumberg who owned 600 acres surrounding Fullerton along Sepulveda Boulevard including several houses now part of Carson Pirie House Museum & Gardens located adjacent to University Village Shopping Center off Ventura Boulevard/Ivar Noren Road southwest of downtown Garden Grove James Hahn migrated from Germany in 1846 when he was just 16 years old following an unsuccessful attempt to immigrate to America via Ellis Island where he lost all his possessions and was turned away because he couldn't afford entry money even though he could read English fluently! He met Anna Gillett Hahn when she came overland from Germany with her family on March 15th 1847 aboard the ship “Anchor” that landed at San Pedro Bay near Point Mugu Shipyard on September 3rd having crossed the ocean originally from Hamburg, Germany! They were married at Mission Concepcion Chapel west side of town January 6th 1850!! They moved into their home located at 5555 E Imperial Ave circa late summer 1847 soon after they moved herefrom New Ulm IL where James had begun working as an errand boy for Dred Scott Chasuble Hardware Store next door !! Their daughter Bertha Belle Ellsworth was born December 25th 1847 during all these early days prior to their moving here!! She later married Dr Franklin Bendixen also known as Father Frankie who resided across Ventura Blvd from them across Ironwood Road until his death suddenly leaving behind 2 children Elmer John Frankenberg Jr.(baptized 1951married 1972 Candy Crowley; died unmarried 1978) – son #1 – then Candy JoAnn Frankenberg(baptized 1953 Married 1988 Jeffery Mclaughlin; deceased 1996)) There are numerous stories about how James finally got permission from American authorities back home in Germany to come ashore under false pretenses during a time when such permission often wasn’t given without specific assurances that all participants would safely return home!!! He finally made it back onto shore October 12th 1840 disembarking with 3 friends onlyNOTE: There are multiple versions about what happened next with regards to this group crossing into America…….. Some say they walked inland for miles due north instead of turning around SEAGULL CREEK which would have put them closer proximity toFullerton…. others claim they continued walking until eventually coming upon some fishermen out fishing near Seal Beach…..still others say they stopped right before reachingfull tide resulting in everyone getting wet regardless In any case not one person returned alive other than James himself……………..all those remaining eventually made it back safe & sound however 8 outOf10 survived various challenges Buried today starting near Seal Beach amongst Manzanar Shakedown Cemeterycomponentsof Historic fullerton post WW II community .
