Garden Grove, California is a city located in Orange County, California. The population was 64,890 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Orange County after Anaheim. Garden Grove is also the third most populous city in Los Angeles County after Beverly Hills and Glendale. The area that now makes up Garden Grove was first inhabited by Native Americans who called it "Nahimba" or "The Place of the Bears." In 1847, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near present-day Garden Grove when he traveled through central Orange County on his way to explore California's interior. By 1853, many other people had discovered gold in and around what is now Garden Grove and began to settle there. The town site was chosen because of its close proximity to an existing military post garrisoned by United States Marines at Camp Pendleton (now Point Mugu Naval Station). A post office called Garden Grove was established in 1853, and remained in operation until 1893. The current name of the city comes from a grove of trees surrounding the original military post garrisoned by Marines. Partly due to this location, nearby Ventura county developed into one of Southern California's most important agricultural areas during this time period with citrus crops being a mainstay of the economy. In 1915, construction began on what would become one of Southern California's largest shopping malls when Calumet Park opened as part of then-new West Coast Boulevard connect Pasadena and Huntington Beach across from City Hall. At its peak, Calumet Park contained more than 1 million square feet (100 hectares) of retail space and generated $15 million per year in sales alone. The mall declined beginning in the early 1990s as development moved away from downtown Los Angeles for suburban growth withinOrange County which has resulted in less foot traffic inside City Hall park boundaries over time; however, new development adjacent to Calumet Park continues to generate economic activity despite challenges posed by environmental factors such as increased traffic caused by nearby Interstate 5 freeway construction projects; nonetheless, redevelopment efforts are ongoing largely consisting of mixed-use developments which have seen some success while others have failed since they were not well planned or executed according to specific guidelines set forth by LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa prior to their implementation - see: Downtown Los Angeles Development Project for more information about these types/projects/.
