Garden Grove is the home of many holster companies and also the headquarters for American Outdoor Brands Corporation (AOBC), one of the largest gunmakers in the world. The first holsters were created by Colt and other firearms manufacturers in 1876. The company Holster & Pistol Company was founded by John L. Sullivan in Garden Grove in 1903. In 1911, AOBC moved its headquarters from Hartford to Garden Grove after purchasing Smith & Wesson pistols from J.P. Morgan's bank branch there. Garden Grove is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 61,912 as of 2017. It is the second most populous city in Orange County after Newport Beach and the fifteenth most populous city in California. The City of Garden Grove was established on November 1, 1887 by fifty-two pioneers from Portola Valley who were attracted to its beautiful location near Anaheim and Santa Ana. The name “Garden Grove” was chosen because it would not be offensive to either the Native Americans or European settlers who had recently arrived in Southern California. The first growth of Garden Grove came from small businesses that took advantage of the new railroadroads which arrived during the late 1800s. By 1910, there were over seventy businesses located in what is now downtown Garden Grove. In 1915, two men named Harry Weidenfeld and Sam Bass bought land north of downtown for $1,000 and began to build a home called Weidenfeld-Bass House. They named their home after both their fathers – Harry Weidenfeld (1863-1941) who had been born at Wappingers Falls in upstate New York and Fritz Bass (1868-1949) who had come from Bavaria, Germany to work on the railroad early in his life. During World War II several thousand residents served within our military through our naval base at Dana Point along with many other institutions and services that made Garden Grove one of America’s leading cultural centers during those critical years. Afterward nearly all original tree seedlings died due to lack of winter cold weather protection; however some wire brush canopies have done very well since then! In 1978 Mayor William Jahnke announced that he would not seek re-election due to his health problems but instead retire as an individual homeowner with no further public service obligations…..the first time such an announcement had ever been made by any mayoralty candidate prior to retirement…. thereafter citizen activism kept him busy until his death on October 25th 2003……..on October 25th 2003 Mayor Jahnke was honored posthumously with a special dedication plaque set up at Dana Point Naval Base….he will long be remembered as one of our most dedicated municipal officials during his tenure

During this time, Garden Grove constructed several large infrastructure projects such as Interstate 10 and State Route 14A which helped support its rapidly expanding population. The name comes from a grove of trees near the original town site. The first post office in Garden Grove opened in 1892. The city was named for Frederick Augustus Gardiner, who donated land to the City of Anaheim and also founded Anaheim Cemetery in 1901. Garden Grove experienced rapid growth following World War II as military families moved into the area and new businesses were established such as Lockheed Martin and Hewlett-Packard Corporation. Growth slowed during the 1960s and 1970s due to high levels of crime, which led to numerous closures of small businesses in the city center. However, recent economic growth has seen renewed investment in downtown Garden Grove with new restaurants, bars and residential developments mixed with commercial uses around First Street SW corner Park Avenue SW. This has helped to revive downtown Garden Grove as a lively shopping and dining district that attracts people from all over Orange County and beyond.
