Garden Grove, CA is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 64,824 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the LA metropolitan area. Garden Grove has been called "The Canyons of Southern California" and "The Garden City". It was founded on November 12, 1887 by Edward Harkness and his wife Fannie Bickerton Harkness as a small community on the east side of Ventura Boulevard in what is now Downtown Garden Grove. In 1898 it became an incorporated town with a population of 10,000 people. In 1907 it was renamed to Garden Grove after Arthur Pineda Parkhurst, mayor and member of the Board of Supervisors from 1915 to 1922. On May 9th 1912 Mayor Charles Kapp appointed John Denton as its first Mayor pro Tem (future Governor Jerry Brown). The first application for incorporation as a city was filed on November 12th that year with 7 residents voting against it because they didn't think it would make much difference since they were all within the unincorporated community known then as "the canyons." On February 16th 1913 the City Council voted 6-0 to accept applications from residents for incorporation into a municipality with an initial population of 5500 people. The name changed once again in 1914 when voters approved changing all lowercase letters to uppercase so that "'Gardn' could be associated more closelywith Angelenos who knew their city better than anyone else.'" In 1916 City Clerk Lillian Guggenheim helped organize what would become Orange County's first election campaign committee which she named after herself - Lillian George Committee - in order to increase voter turnout before statehood arrived four years later. That same year also saw one of the most significant events in history when World War I veteranMajor General Hugh Jethro Trench decided to move his Headquarters from San Francisco back into Pasadena where he had started living some time earlier after being discharged from army service at Camp Roberts near Huntington Beach. He offered 50 acres (20 ha) across Griffith Avenue from South Pasadena lot for $5000 and immediately submitted plans for building barracks there and naming them Fort MacArthur after General MacArthur who had given America's war effort its start several months earlier while serving as Commanding Officer at Guadalcanal west of New Guinea during World War 1 – making him one of only two Americans ever awarded both military decorations: Distinguished Service Cross & Purple Heart (the other being Dwight Eisenhower). A plaque dedicated to Major General Trench stands today at Fort MacArthur National Monument inside Recreation Area adjacent to Santa Monica Pier
