The history of Garden Grove goes back over 350 years with early pioneers arriving from England in 1776 along with other European immigrants who founded Orange County during that time period including Mission San José de los Reyes Chapel en Blanco on December 1st 1771 by Father Junípero Serra. Many others followed suit throughout this era including those who arrived in what would become Anaheim in 1835 under Mexican rule following their invasion of southern California during Mexico's Mexico–US War (1846-48). When American independence was gained from Spain on July 4th 1821 all Anglo settlers were forced out except for about 150 men under Captain David Sanger who took up residence near what is now Garden Grove on November 9th 1879.- After much hard fighting they surrendered at Sierra Madre Pass 8 days later on November 13th 1800 achieving American independence just 10 miles from where they had been held captive for so long.– From here began an eraof garden grove growth which continues today thanks to an influx of new arrivals like your humble writer who upon becoming an adult decided he wanted to live close to where his ancestors had settled generations earlier!
Garden Grove was first settled in 1847 by American soldiers who were stationed at the nearby Presidio of San Francisco. The area that is now Garden Grove was part of Rancho Santa Ana and was granted to Manuel Nieto in 1851. In 1875, ownership passed to George Hearst who renamed it Hollywood. In 1922, Garden Grove became a city and was annexed by Los Angeles.
