Garden Grove is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 83,754 at the 2010 census. Garden Grove was one of two cities in Orange County to be annexed by Los Angeles on January 1, 1974. The first people to live in what is now Garden Grove were the Arroyo Huckeys and their children who came overland from Alta California in 1847. They named their town after a grove of trees near where they lived. In 1853, General Mariano Vallejo established himself and his family at the corner of Figueroa Street and Central Avenue in present-day Garden Grove. In 1861 Captain John Cranch founded Rancho Santa Ana de la Laguna east of present-day Garden Grove on land that he had purchased from José Joaquin Murrieta. The land included part of what is now bounded by Figueroa Street, Central Avenue, and La Verne Boulevard today's City Park; this area became known as Rancho Cuyamaca (later "RanchoSantaAna"). On May 26th 1860 Sheriff Donelson Jarrell captured about 20 armed Mexicans nearpresent-day Van Nuys Airport while trying to cross into San Bernardino County from Los Angeles County during the Mexican–American War; these Mexican outlaws were later released without charges due to U.S.–Mexican border tensions at that time. The Arrest Act of 1862 created an informal law enforcement agency called the "Los Angeles Rangers." This organization was used to prevent such westward migration as it violated Section 8(a) of the Civil Rights Act of 1871 which forbid discrimination against citizens based on race or color in any form including housing or public accommodations (such as restaurants).
