Galt, California is located in the Central Valley of California and is a town of about 12,000 people. The population was last estimated at 10,815 in 2000. Galt was founded by James Galt in 1849. The town grew around the Galt land grant that James Galt received from the Mexican government in 1848. In 1859, John Cushing bought the land grant from James Galt and developed it into a small community with a post office and two stores. The first school was opened in 1865 and served as the only school until 1931. In 1886, George Wickersham built his mill on the east side of Main Street. It became one of the largest textile mills in Northern California and produced clothing for American soldiers during World War II. In 1951, it shut down due to lack of money but reopened three years later as an agricultural research center called California State University-Riverside (CSU-Riverside). In 1984, CSU-Riverside merged with UC Riverside to create UC Riverside County which included Galt within its boundaries. Today, GALT remains a small community with close proximity to both UC Riverside and San Bernardino counties near Los Angeles metropolitan area

One of GALT's most significant moments came on July 4th, 1959 when America’s first television show “The Ed Sullivan Show” aired from Studio City (now Universal City) across Hollywood Boulevard from GALT’s studios. This event helped bring attention to GALT and its economy which had been slowly improving since World War II due to new transportation options available thanks to developments such as Interstate 10 (and later I-405). In recent years, many businesses have closed down or relocated to other parts of Southern California due to changing demographics or competition from neighboring cities with more expensive housing prices. However, many residents remain active in their local communities by participating in various civic organizations and helping with local projects
Galt, California (now known as Galt) was founded in 1849 by George C. Galt and his brother, James A. Galt. The first post office in the area was established at Galt on February 25, 1850. The name of the town originates from a mountaintop near where it now stands called "Galow," which means "place of retreat." The first school in the area opened in October 1850 and served students from Galt, Atascadero and other nearby towns. A hotel was built in 1852 and continued to be used by people until 1914 when it became a movie theater. In 1865 both the railroad and stagecoach lines reached Galt, making it an important center for trade with surrounding villages. In 1876 two twin volcanoes called Mount Whitney were erupted in central California; this caused a great deal of damage to nearby communities and made life difficult for those living near Mount Whitney
