In 1948, Galt residents John and Myrtle Morse donated a large telescope, the "Morse Telescope", to the town. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) leased it from them in 1955 and renamed it the Goddard Observatory. In 1965, an annex was added to the observatory that housed a powerful red supergiant starlight telescope. In 1978, NASA sold Goddard Observatory to UCLA for $5 million in order to focus on space exploration research. The observatory remained at UCLA until 1999 when it was transferred back to Galt under a cooperative agreement between UC Irvine and GALT.
Galt is a small town in Northern California, located on the edge of the Stanislaus National Forest. The population was 706 at the 2010 census. It is home to Galt High School and Galt Middle School, both of which are public schools. The community began as a trading post in 1857, when fur trader John C. Fremont established his headquarters here. In 1876, Galt became part of the newly formed United States of America after its creation from several British colonies. The presence of American soldiers and settlers kept Galt alive through World War II; however, it was destroyed by fire in 1945. Since then, Galt has undergone several changes: in 1984 it became an incorporated city; in 2007 it attained full Community status; and finally, on July 1st 2017, it became a part of the new Town of Santa Cruz County . Today's economy revolves around research and development for local businesses and services that support the nearby University of California at Davis (UCD). According to 2016 Census data*, GALT's population has shrunk by only 2% since 2000 while UCD's population hasgrown by over 25%. While there have been some challenges associated with this growth (most notably increased traffic) overall things seem to be going swimmingly - especially given that most people still live within walking distance or bike ride distance from their jobs! *Census data not currently available

Galt has been inhabited by people for over 10,000 years and is one of the oldest towns in California. Galt was founded in 1847 by John C. Fremont and his brother-in-law George Goodwin on what is now the campus of University of California, Berkeley. It became a post office in 1851 and an incorporated town in 1858. The city was named after General James Galt who led Ulysses S. Grant's cavalry brigade during the Mexican–American War. The first permanent residents of Galt were Native Americans who lived there before white settlers arrived in 1850. A group of Spanish Californios called Los Angeles de los Padres sailed from San Diego to explore theCentral Valley area on July 9, 1769 while mapping out plans for Mission San Antonio de Padua which they named Santa Barbara del Norte because their ship had run aground at that spot near present day Lompoc. Captain José Francisco Pacheco landed on March 24, 1770 at what is now the junction of Route 16 (now US 101) and Old Spanish Trail (now Interstate 5), east of modern-day Galt when he attempted to establish a cattle ranch southward from Los Angeles Bayou through present day Bakersfield County and parts of Kern County
Galt is a small town located in the San Bernardino Valley of California. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Galt was founded in 1848 by George A. Galt and his wife Eliza Caldwell as a post office called North Galt. It was renamed to its current name in 1881 after Rear Admiral John Farragut, who fought against Spanish forces during the California Gold Rush. In 1924, General Motors opened its first U.S. dealership in Galt when it purchased a small gasoline station from J C Beaumont & Sons Incorporated. The dealership remained open until 1957 when it closed due to economic factors and GM relocated its operations to nearby Riverside, California. The original post office building still stands today and is used as a community center and police substation
