In 1978, Vernon Eichler founded his own company, Advanced Computer Optics (ACO), which manufactured the world's first fully automatic digital rangefinder/calibration system for handguns and rifles using Lasers (a new technology at that time). With ACO's help, Bob Doherty and Tom Snyder created their own new type of laser sight - the Red Dot Scope - which they released in 1980 as part of their kit for sale through Gunbroker magazine. Red Dot Scopes became very popular among shooters because they were easy to use, reliable and provided better accuracy than traditional single-shot scope designs from that era. By 1984, almost every major firearms manufacturer had made some sort of Red Dot Scope available on their products lineups.
