In 1887, Galt, California was founded by John Wesley Holman. The town was named after the nearby Kern River which ran through it. The first post office in Galt opened in 1888. By 1907, the population of Galt had grown to over 1000 residents and consisted of a few shops and a small grocery store. In 1912, the first private high school in Galt opened; it was later renamed Kirtland High School. In 1933, the Post Office closed and all mail moved to San Bernardino County until 1991 when they reopened at 601 S State St., now known as the San Bernardino County Annex Building. The name is derived from the Spanish word "galda" meaning "trees." Galt's father, James Galt, had been born in 1794 in what is now eastern Oregon. The late 19th century saw rapid growth in Mountain View following the opening of Stanford University; however, due to competition from nearby Palo Alto and Menlo Park (which had larger populations), GALT failed to keep up with these new cities during this period. This led to increased tensions between the two towns - especially after Sutter built a new courthouse in downtown GALT in 1903 - which eventually led to physical confrontations between both communities. - During World War I (1914-18), while Mountain View was busy manufacturing munitions for war effort;GALT did not have much trouble supplying local needs despite difficult times – until Stanford got involved
