Galt, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The name was given to it by General George Custer during his 1876-77 campaign for United States Senator from California. At that time, the rancho (land grant) called Galt was located east of Stockton and north of Bakersfield. In 1881, Galt became part of what is now Fresno County when that county was organized from parts of Tulare and Kern counties. The first permanent settler in Galt was John Shields who arrived there in 1867. Shields built a cabin on therancho called Big Horn which would become the town's first post office. From 1870 to 1880, several other families moved into Galt including David Waddell, James Fenton and Hiram Dodge. In 1881, following Mexican-American War hostilities between Mexico and America, Galt became part of the newly formed Fresno County under Ulysses S Grant as part of his effort to secure election as governor of California against David Wilburforce Smith. As with most areas in California at this time, land grants were granted on an ad hoc basis by individual ranchers based upon their own needs or interests in the area at any given time. In 1898, following World War I efforts by American allies to obtain control over Central America through Plan Colombia and its aftermath (including Santa Clara County becoming one of its largest recipients), the United States acquired land grants along the San Joaquin River southward from Yosemite National Park westward to present day Fresno County lines> One such grantees was Hinkle & Co., founded by John Hinkle (1848-1927) who had received a patent for land rights along both sides of central San Francisco Bay dating back to 1775>. A group led by Hinkle purchased 5 square miles (12 km²) around what is now downtown Galt from Hugh Miller in 1903*. The new town sprang up around this new development and would be known until 1925 as "Hinkleville". By 1907*, however*, Hinkleville had achieved some degree of notoriety due largely to two factors: First, local residents believed that he had cheated them out OF THEIR LOTS IN THE TOWN; second* [*the 1906 earthquake destroyed much property within walking distance or mere minutes' notice*], due largely to increased competition among developers for limited government subsidy money available for towns/cities across America after World War I*. Although no more than a tiny outpost near today's intersection of State Street/Highway 99W** (*about midway between downtown GALT AND WHERE THE SAN JOACIN RIVER BEGINS***), Hinkleville * nevertheless* enjoyedrelative prosperity until 1925 when plans were made ***** [*to move him outside city limits] due primarily TO HIS PREVIOUS EXTORTION OF CITY SERVICES FROM THE CITIZENS OF THAT TIME].
