In 1876, Galt was founded by John Sutter and his brother-in-law, George W. Dixon. The brothers were looking for a place to build a new home and started collecting guns from around the area. In 1877, they hired men to help them move theguns around and in 1880 they built their first store on Main Street. One of the items that John Sutter brought over from Europe was a rifle sling called an "arizon." Many buildings were destroyed or damaged; however, most residents adapted quickly and continued to live their lives as usual until shortly before their town wasinvaded by Japanese forces on September 9th 1944 during Operation Iwakuni which saw many civilian deaths as well as destruction throughout much of Greater Los Angeles County
