From this purchase came many start-ups within the agricultural industry including: Moreno's Flower Farm; Edward Weyers' Weyer's Woolen Mills; Jens Jensen's Jensen Dairy; Harry Hansen's Hansen's Paper Mill; Wanda Pugh’s Mrs. Pugh’s Creamery; Alfred Noyes’ First National Bank; and Myron Sandom’s Sandom Implement Sales Company among others. Galt, California was founded in 1853 as a cattle and horse Ranch by George Galt. The town was platted in 1865 by J.C. Nichols and W.H. Pratt, who named it for James Logan Galt, the founder of the Logan Mining Company in Denver, Colorado. The first post office opened in Galt on February 14, 1867. In 1871, the town became an agricultural center with a population of 100 citizens and two businesses: Avila Millinery and Lumbermen's Supply Store. By 1895, the population had grown to 300 citizens and four businesses: Avila Hotel, Masonic Temple No 1 & 2 (now part of the Jack London Museum), local grocery store (now part of Pacific Gas & Electric) and Mrs. Henson's schoolhouse which served as a social service center for rural residents until 1915 when it was burned down by fire
