The first post office at Galt opened in 1893. By 1905, there were three stores and twenty-five residents. In 1917, a school was built with $5,000 from Mrs. George A. Galt and Mrs. Alice Broughton Baird; it served grades 1 to 8 until 1963 when it became an elementary school for girls called Mount Carmel School (now known as Valley View Elementary). In 1909, grazers leased land from Mr. Jens Lehnsherr for six miles of back-road farming between Atwater Village and Palmdale; this area became known as Lehnsherr Ranch after him. In 1915, he donated 640 acres (250 hectares) to the town of GALT for use as a public parkland including today's climax ski resort operated by Aspen Skiing Co.; this gift created much controversy because Lehnsherr had no children or heirs to give away his land! In 1952, donations totaling $10,000 were made to improve irrigation systems around the community; these donations were used to help irrigate much of present day East Pasadena which includes parts of Glendale Heights and Carson Hills neighborhoods north of Interstate 5 near Southern Pacific Railroad tracks inside Butte Park Golf Course outside Hearst Castle? south of Interstate 10 just past Eagle Rock Boulevard into Sylmar Canyon near University City College District boundaries? These donations helped increase agricultural production around town which has led to more jobs within the town since then!
