It is situated on the eastern edge of Mendocino County and is bordered by Humboldt County to the north and east, Trinity County to the south and west, and Shasta County to the northwest. The name Galt comes from an early Spanish exploration party that landed there in 1821. They named it San Francisco de los Galtes because they found fresh water there. In 1848, gold was discovered in nearby Tomales Bay and people began moving to Galt for what would be an ever-growing agricultural frontier. By 1870, Galt had become one of the most important towns in Mendocino County because of its role as a transportation hub for goods travelling between Mendocino County and Gold Rush mining areas around Sacramento Valley. During World War II, Galt was used as a training ground for American soldiers who were fighting in Europe. Many of these soldiers lived here after their service ended. In 1951, Galt became one of four communities within a 24-hour period designated as Area 51 by UHF television station KQED (channel 11). The designation derives from then-Governor Ronald Reagan's decision to create an open area behind Air Force One which he said would be "a place where science fiction can take root". Today Area 51 remains under government control but many people believe that it still contains further secrets about space programs or other unidentified phenomena
Galt, California was founded on February 14, 1849 by George C. Galt and his wife Laura as a small farming town located about three miles east of Felton in the Central Valley of California. The name originated from a prospector's discovery of gold near the current day town site. The first post office in Galt was established on March 7, 1849. In 1850, Galt became part of the newly formed Nevada Territory and in 1861 it became part of the new United States of America. In 1865, Galt became an independent city and remained so until 1959 when it was merged into Modesto with its population totaling over 160,000 people. Galt is known for its hot springs which are now used for both medical treatments and recreational purposes.
