Galt, California is a small town in San Joaquin County located about 20 miles east of Stockton. It was founded in 1864 by George Galt and named for him. The population of Galt was 1,438 at the 2010 census. The town is home to the Galt Air Force Base which provides service to the United States military and NASA Ames Research Center. The local school system includes six elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. There are also a number of private academies and daycare centers in Galt. GALT: A History In 1864 George Galt came up with the idea for what would become Galt, California. He thought it would be an excellent place to live because it had plenty of water and wood resources nearby while being close to other towns and services. In 1865 he bought 102 acres (40 hectares) of land from José Ortiz on behalf of his brother-in-law John Doherty; this land became known as "GALT." In 1866 Kirtland Cranch was organized around mile post 5 on U.S./Mexican Boundary Road between Stockton and Visalia; it included some of present-day GALT along with parts of present-day Tehama County . . . In 1868 Kirtland Cranch split off from Visalia into two separate villages - North VISALIA & South VISALIA - when Territorial Governor Pacheco ordered all creeks within Mexican territory to be surveyed for water supplies! As part of this survey Kirtland Cranch's north boundary changed frommilepost 5 eastward (and so its boundaries became Visalia proper on the south side) onto US Highway 99W just south of today's intersection with State Route 238 near Mount Shasta National Park! A few years later in 1870 Captain James Wolkowski built a sawmill on Creek creek west side Of VISALIA extending production until 1905 when fire destroyed mills across state line due largely to overuse by early settlers! Prior milling there were only three homes in community!!! By 1860 there were over 100 residents living near main settlement & almost 400 acres irrigated!!! Today most residents still farm their acreage although many have moved away or left due mainly to economic reasons! In 1875 John Doherty married Sarah Jafferty who ancestry can be traced back to Easton Township where they lived before migrating westward several years earlier!! They farmed together until her death in 1901 followed by his widow's succession that continued until 1940 !! After her death children purchased additional tracts including current site which formed nucleus for community !! Some members remain descendants thru marriage or adoption

Galt, California was founded in 1849 by George Galt, a gold prospector. The town was named for Galt's brother-in-law, John C. Fremont. In 1863, the U.S. Army built Fort Stockton here and began to garrison Californias west coast defense against Mexico's ambitions to control the territory. The fort served as the nucleus of what would become San Francisco before it fell to Mexican forces in 1846 and was abandoned in 1851. Galt rebuilt the fort in his own image and became its first mayor in 1865. He also began developing what would become downtown Galt into an important commercial center with stores, hotels, and restaurantseurrounded by a busy street grid that remains today. In 1868, Galt married Maria Antonia Chavez de la Rúa y Sánchez y Ulloa, who was from Pueblo de Las Casas on the Baja California Peninsula; they would have two children before her death in 1902 at age 49 years old from tuberculosis contracted while working as a maid for their father-in-law’s family farm near present day La Jolla (now San Diego). In 1870, Galt organized a group of investors who purchased all of land between Gonzalo Jiménez Street (now Market Street) and Third Street east of Interstate 5 for $5 per acre ($25 per kilometer). The new town hall and mills were completed within five years and soon became known as America's "New Venice". Residents elected their first city council in 1872 under the leadership of Mayor George Ewing Sr., who had come from Cincinnati hoping to found another economic center on America's West Coast similar to Spain’s Valencia or Milwaukee Wisconsin’s Menomonee Falls Rapids area where he had worked prior thereto as an agent for Wm Halleck & Co., merchants at Vallejo California [later renamed American Gold Fields]. By 1880 nearly all businesses within blocks of City Hall wereowned or managed by citizens or immigrants either born or naturalized herein including such famous names as Avedon photography cofounder Julius Strandman vice president Gideon Welles publisher Henry Luce electrician Charles Fenton ice cream vendor Winthrop Rockefeller jr.. With over 100 Chinese laborers engaged primarily bricklaying/building roads etc.,GALT reached unparalleled heights during this time period becoming one of most diverse cities ever established on American soil with more than 20% non white residents .
