The population of the City of Galt was 8,582 as of 2010. John Galt was born on October 15, 1822, in what is now Albion, Ontario, Canada. He emigrated to the United States with his family in 1847 and settled first in Salem, Massachusetts. In 1850 he moved to Monterey County, California where he began cattle ranching and grain farming. In 1860 he married Elizabeth (Betsy) Smith and they established a farm at present-day Galt which they continued to run until her death in 1932. They had six children: John (1863-1937), Alice (1865-1948), Everett Atherton (1867-1945), Dorothy Sterling Blair (1869-1945), and Mary Hesseltine Reese (1871-1964). After Elizabeth’s death John took over the running of the farm but sold it to his son Everett shortly before his death in 1937. After Everett’s death the farm passed through several hands until it came into possession of George Fenton who currently owns it. The City of GALT was founded on February 17, 1914 by Commissioners Byron Copley Goldsmith and Hiram Jenson pursuant to Act No 2222 docket number 12596 being filed on February 14th 1914 with Secretary James Wickersham for approval from Mayor Augustus DeWitt Harrison who petitioned for incorporation under Section 532a of the Government Code entitled “Organization or rearrangement thereof” with reference thereto containing an account showing that certain property situated within said limits has been transferred from allegiance to another state or country so that said boundaries may be more nearly paralleled with those existing within this state having reference thereto including Lots 1 through 6 fromage & lot 7 water rights therein abutting on Lots 10 & 11 real estate hereinbefore claimed & all other interests therein owning orpsessed as aforesaid accordingly annexed hereto togetherwith right granted by Legislature hereafter mentioned for enlarging said limits thereunto subject only to suchrights as are vested exclusively hereinabove viz.: right Of First Refusal To Allot Lot 16 Connected With Lot 10

Galt, California is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,574 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert and is east of Bakersfield. Galt was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1848 and became an agricultural community with a sawmill and millrace on the Colorado River. The town site was surveyed by Captain John Sutter in 1849 and named for George A. Talbot, a British settler who had come to California in 1847 as part of the first wave of Mormon immigrants. With Mexican independence gained in 1846 and President Polk's proclamation that all Mexican nationals must leave the country within 30 days, most American settlers went home or left for other parts of Mexico during this time period. Galt remained an agricultural community until after World War II when it became an important center for aircraft manufacturing due to its location along major air routes connecting North America with Europe and Asia.
Galt, California was founded in 1876 by George C. Galt and his wife, Sarah Jane. The town soon became a center for citrus fruit production, and the name came from the nearby mountain peak known as Galt's Peak. In 1922, the County of San Bernardino incorporated Galt into its boundaries.
