Fullerton, California is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 150,511 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the western edge of Anaheim and its name comes from Fullerton Canyon which runs through it. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fullerton were members of the Spanish party led by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. A mission was established here in 1821 by Father José Palomares with the help of Mission Santa Ana. In 1871, full time town status was granted to Fullerton by state legislature as part of State Normal School Act program for towns that had been founded within county limits since 1861. In 1903, an oil well was drilled near Fullerton and production began soon afterward; however, due to high drilling costs and a lack of findable gas reserves, the industry ended before it could produce much revenue for Fullerton or Orange County. The City Council voted in 1907 to annex upper Yorba Linda Valley but this annexation failed because there were no landowners who wanted to submit their land for annexation. The post office opened at Fullerton on November 3rd, 1899; however mail service had already ceased between Laguna Beach andFullerton due to the completion of Coast Mountain Railway line across Yorba Linda Valley on October 1st (the first major railroad project in Orange County). A small number of people died from pneumonia brought over from San Francisco during World War I when air travel became available again after restrictions had been placed upon air travel following the war; however this did not start a trend as many other Midwestern cities experienced similar health problems such as tuberculosis following World War I when people returned home (Fullerton also saw an increase in businesses related to food production). In 1923 local officials decided that Crown Heights would be renamed "Fullerton" instead because they felt it would more accurately reflect community spirit and history than any other possible name choices given that Crown Heights had existed since 1871 while Fuller's store date back only two years! This naming decision has stuck throughout history with various incarnations including "Crown Heights", "Downtown Fullerton", "Urbania", etc., ever since perpetuating memory about this important part of Orange County history. On July 20th 1925 citizens approved plans for a shopping center adjacent to then-Highway 241/Pinehurst Drive calledCentury Shopping Center which eventually evolved into what is now Macy's Department Store Downtown full time! One interesting note about Century Shopping Center: It actually predates Disneyland opening up nearby Fashion Street just north of Centerville Rd., though there are indications that Disneyland may have influenced howCentury Shopping Center functions today - Specifically having more levels with additional stores added below ground level making it less accessible as an outdoor mall like Disney does compared to older Centerville mall which originally functioned more like an indoor/outdoor theme park!
