Fullerton, California is a town in Orange County, California. The population was 963 at the 2010 census. The Fullerton city limits extend to the east and south of Irvine Spectrum Center, while the unincorporated communities of Laguna Beach and Garden Grove are to the north. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fullerton were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his party on October 22, 1542. In 1821, The Mission Santa Ana deFullerton was founded by Father Fernando Rivera. Gold was discovered in 1848 in an area now known as Carpenteria Hill andmining operations began soon thereafter. On September 14, 1850, full control of both missions was granted to Don Manuel Nieto y Salazar. On December 12 of that year Mexican forces under General José Joaquín Carrillo invaded northern Orange County with intent of taking possession of all gold mines in that region including those at Carpenteria Hill. By January 8, 1851 Carrillo had withdrawn his troops from Fullerton after discovering no gold but instead a series of small hills rich in silver ore called "Mojave". A new mining district was organized around this discovery and named Moreno Valley after Captain Antonio Moreno who led the search for it; however most people today believe that Moreno Valley actually refers to southern San Bernardino County which includes Fullerton proper

The name "Fullerton" is derived from Anglo-Saxon and means "place of full run." The first people to settle in what is now Fullerton were Anglo-American ranchers who named their settlement after their farmstead near Fullerton Lake. In 1821, James Phelan built a small arsenal on land that he had purchased from Juan Palomo. In 1827, John Sutter and his brother Rancho San Buenaventura acquired much of what is now Fullerton from Phelan's heirs. They founded the towns of Anaheim and Santa Ana with their holdings. Santa Ana became self-governing when it merged with Anaheim in 1884. The City of Fullerton was incorporated on April 6, 1907 by proclamation of Governor Manuel López de la Vega following the passage of an act entitled "An Act to Incorporate and Regulate the Affairs of the City ofFullerton". The original City Hall building was replaced by its current structure in 1922. On July 14, 1923, voters approved Measure M which provided for annexation by Anaheim into Fullerton during fiscal year 1924; however this annexation did not occur because then-Governor Ralph Jeary refused to signs any such annexations without specific voter approval as mandated by state law at that time). In 1925, residents voted to change the name from "Angleton" to "Fullerton". A referendum held two years later yielded a similar result; therefore, the name has been Change Name every eight years or so since 1925 (except for 1966 when it reverted back to Angleton). The city has seen some growth over time due to its location adjacent to major Interstate 5 corridors and its close proximity to both Disneyland Resort (just south of town) and Orange County’s largest shopping center - Dana Point mall - which has made it one of Southern California’s most popular tourist destinations over recent decades.
