Fullerton, California is a city located in Orange County, California. The population was 105,898 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Orange County after Irvine. The city is named for Fullerton Township and Park, which were both named in 1881 by George Armstrong Cushing. The first people to live here were the Ohlone people who occupied land that now includes much of what is Downtown Fullerton and parts of Fountain Hills andPort Hueneme. The area was first settled by Mexicans in 1821 as part of Mission San Fernando Rey. In 1848, full control of Anaheim was given to Los Angeles because Santiago Alvarado refused to sell his land to Anahuacans. As a result, Fullerton became an enclave within Los Angeles County. By 1870, however, it had outgrown its small community status and began to attract Mexican American settlers and entrepreneurs who founded businesses such as Don Julio's Restaurant (now Guild). In 1906 the City Council voted 2-1 to name the city "Fullerton" after General John Atherton Fullerton (1824-1907) who had served as Commanding Officer of Presidio Heights during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). Atherton had fought at Palo Alto on October 20th 1861 under General Winfield Scott against Mexican forces led byGeneral Joaquín de la Peña y Costilla y Borja y Pavón. He later served as Mayor of San Francisco from 1897-1900; Lieutenant Governor of California from 1901-1902; Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at Paris from 1903-1904; Commander in Chief United States Coast Guard from 1905 until his death on January 29th 1907. The first people to live in what is now Fullerton were Native American traders who traveled from Southern California overland during the 1820s. In 1828 Mexican land grants were made to Native Americans in what is now Anaheim Hills. A year later an act by the state legislature designated Irvine as the new county seat because San Bernardino had become too populous for Irvine to support. In 1892, a group of businessmen led by oilman John Kern came up with the idea to build an artificial harbour on Laguna Seca where they could ship oil products from Menlo Park into Los Angeles Harbor without having to go through San Francisco or Hong Kong. On December 12, 1893, they founded City Oil Company with a initial investment of $1 million (). Fullerton began growth rapidly after World War II when servicemen returning home filled up full-time jobs throughout southern Orange County while construction continued on nearby military housing developments such as Northridge and Tustin (then known as Garden Grove). In 1957 Occidental Petroleum Corporation bought all shares in City Oil Company for $2 million (). Because Fullerton had no railways or airports until 1960 when CA State Route 17 was built (), it took many years for economic development to take hold within the city boundaries due mainly to lack of transportation options outside town limits. However; once full-time employment started flowing into town from adjacent cities (South El Monte and Stanton), full-time growth ensued which continues today with both residential development (full service restaurants/bars) along Laguna Seca Boulevard and commercial buildings situated near Interstate 5 / US 101 interchange including several large shopping malls like Fullerton Center mall which opened in 1977 just north of downtown Fullerton – one mile south of current day Main Street – bringing much needed retail traffic directly into downtown Fullerton core whereas earlier there have been few if any developments closer than 3 blocks away from I-5 / US 101 exit at Alhambra Road/San Diego Drive etc..

Post-World War II growth continued as businesses thrived in a postwar boom period which saw high levels of job creation, housing development and population growth throughout Southern California paralleling that in other major urban areas across North America during this time period (e.g., San Francisco Bay Area). In 1957, Mayor Harry Chandler announced plans to rezone all land within city limits for housing development purposes which would result in 2 million square feet (190 hectares) becoming available for residential use over a 10-year period starting with 1965; this led to Fullerton becoming one of the most rapidly expanding cities in California during this era with median household income reaching $76,000 by 1978. However, due to restrictive zoning laws and competition from nearby cities such as Torrance and Hawthorne during the late 1960s through early 1970s while new freeway projects were proposed), full-time employment within city limits ended abruptly after 1976 when Interstate 5 became fully operational linking Los Angeles to Orange County viahardship techniques necessitated by construction costs associated with its widening project from four lanes to eight lanes concurrent with I-5 traffic congestion).
