The city's nickname is "The Dalles" because it used to be that all water supplies came from springs located near downtown Fullerton. However, this water supply stopped flowing around 1965 when a new pipeline was constructed and now comes exclusively from Santa Ana River

In order for Fullerton to resume its rapid growth after the war, Mayor Harry Sargent developed a plan called "A New beginning" that aimed to modernize the city through infrastructure improvements such as new schools and highways. This included developing two new neighborhoods: Pioneer Heights (famed for its high quality housing) and Boyle Heights (home of influential African American entrepreneurs). Despite these efforts however, Fullerton experienced another period of recession throughout the 1970s before bouncing back in recent years with some consecutively strong financial performance numbers culminating in 2017 when it became one of America's fastest growing cities with an estimated population increase of 7%. Thanks largely to this robust economyFullerstonians have enjoyed increasing social mobility both within their own city limits as well as across Los Angeles County - making it oneofthe most prosperous communities in Orange County overall ().
On July 7, 1857, Fullerton was founded when two men named George and Uriah Fullerton purchased 640 acres of land in what is now Orange County. The town's first residents were brought over from nearby Santa Ana by wagonloads of goods to start a new life. In 1863, the first post office was opened in Fullerton with three mail carriers. In 1902, the county seat was moved from Fullerton to Anaheim because Anaheim had more than double the population of Fullerton at that time.
