In 1914, Fullerton became one of the cities that joined Los Angeles metropolitan area through annexation. In 1950, over 60% of Fullerton's population was made up of Latinos; today, Latino residents make up just under 40% of the city's total population. The history of Fullerton is intertwined with that of its largest city neighbor to the south – Los Angeles. At various points in its history both cities have been home to significant Mexican American populations who have contributed importantly to both their economies and their cultures: Mexicans were early settlers in Fullerton and many local businesses were founded by them; Mexicans played an important role in politics and public life during Los Angeles' heyday as well; after World War II many full-time Mexican Americans left for towns such as Phoenix or San Bernardino to take advantage of better employment opportunities while they awaited U.S.-born children’s naturalization which followed soon afterward; following the riots that erupted throughout Central America following the 1992 LA Olympics there was a large influx into LA suburbs (mostly along Wilshire Boulevard) among Angelenos eager for escape from what they saw aspcities becoming dangerous due to poor police governance

In the 1920s, Fullerton developed into one of the leading cities in California for automobile manufacturing, thanks in part to its location at the junction of two major car-manufacturing routes. In 1948,Fullerton became a state capital; and in 1960 it became a city again.
