When it opened on November 12 of that year, it included an arsenal/amusement park with shooting galleries, a 500-seat theater, four barracks for military use (the first such structure erected in North America), two stores/warehouses totaling , nine acres (.40 km2) of gardens buffering the fortifications from civilian populations (), three huts used as quarters for soldiers during their absences (), a millrace providing water supply ()and some 300 live oak trees (). On February 1518 part of Rancho Cucamonga went to US$5 per acre ($77 total) to Mexico's Maximilian I under Treaty #8 which granted annexation of California by Mexico; partial payment had been made 10 years earlier with $20 per acre ($322 total) .
