Fresno's history dates back to 1821 when Spanish explorers discovered an area that would become known as Rancho San Joaquin. On February 14th of that year, Francisco Manuel Ortega y Gasset arrived at rancho and named it La Página (The Page), because its location resembled that of a Mexican-era page book with a picturesque view from atop a hill (See Fig 1). In 1847, after Mexico had won their independence from Spain and become an independent country under the name Republic of Mexico, they decided to give Rancho San Joaquin to their new citizens in order to help them support themselves during this timepiece event. The land for the town site was donated by Governor Félix Márquez Cámpora and given to José Castro de la Peña who called it Paso del Norte (the North Gate) because it connected downtown Los Angeles with nearby Monterey Park. When Alta California became a territory under US jurisdiction following Mexican independence in 1848, most of what is now Fresno County belonged to Californio Mexicans living east of Mexicali Creek due northward from Ranchería Allende Guerrero on Santa Cruz Island which lay between modern-day Bakersfield and Petaluma Bayou near today's Delano Heights neighborhood on Interstate 5 south side).
