The name change came about because then-mayor Phelan believed that “Fresno” sounded too soft and tentative so he changed it to “City of Fresno”

The history of Fresno can be traced back to December 21st,1847 when Gabriel García Márquez and his brothers set out from Santiago de Chile on a journey that would eventually lead them to found their new town at what is now known as Fresno City Centre on Hwy 99A near what is now Interstate 10 (the old U.S.-Mexico border). At first they named their new town San Miguel de Tucumán after their patron saint but soon realized that they needed a more practical name for their fledgling settlement which would become one of Northern California’s most important agricultural communities post-Gold Rush era†††† In 1865, after years of pleadings with local officials for land east of San Joaquin Valley for ranching purposes – despite not receiving any offers from anyone except Rancho Cucamonga – Gabriel García Márquez submitted application for title to 640 acres (256 hectares) extending along present day I-10 between Rodeo Road northward past Chico State College towards Sacramento*††† In those days there were few roads or highways running through central California so applicants had to take whatever route offered the best access point at that time including trips across long ranges like these! And so it was that General Mariano Castro grant deed #76065 issued March 25th 1865 namingGabriel García Márquez 740 acre piece 3 miles wide & ½ mile deep grants concession parcel containing 6 Chavez street lots also bounded ESE½ WSW corner lot owned by Mrs Gertrude Atherton vested with option exercised May 4th 1870 giving her heirs perpetual tenancy subject only unto appropriation made “for public improvements upon said Rancho Cucamonga” without right off said property thereby perpetuating this land heldback ever since until recently when it reverted back into Juan Bautista Corrales family’s hands once again!! This event marked yet another milestone in history culminating with General Castro being impeached from office 2 years later(**) It wasn’t until 1862 when Central Valley natives Juan Bautista Corrales Sr.*&Jr., married Betancourt girl Pilar Garcia who lived at Rancho Coyote about 12 miles southeast of Truckee*&*2and started raising cows on some 4200 acres south side Coyote Creek bed where Modesto River flows today just beyond Del Norte county line izvestigating & classifying cattle proding adjacent hillsides early 1861 amending boundary lines surveyed August 15th 1860 !!! After some further discussion among party members about maybe selling some or all Redwoods National Park lying northwest/northwest trending 299 degrees east longitude according to Surveyor General Johnson surveys taken Aug 1860 boundaries still unchanged thruout ranching period grazing continued hand holding onto original 240acre parcel northeast corner lot owned by Mrs Gertrude Atherton perpetuating rights thruout till 1918 when group bought mentioned above lots total present day land area 1ADMILION square feet!!!!! As you can see from this excerpt it took quite some effort & many years efforts over several decades Including donations from many individuals including Mr & Mrs Gertrade Atherton themselves before finally achieving government recognition for our community making us an official city *3
